Hi ya.....Car is turning over but won't fire up.....did notice that it was running a bit lumpy on tickover earlier in the day but also had cambelt replaced recently (water pump went so repalced it - had new belt 8,000 miles earlier!) but had been running fine.....it did do this once before so is the cambelt replacement coincidental and/or could it be MAFS......thanks for any ideas...

Very possibly Crank Sensor if it won't fire up at all. Not uncommon. The very lumpy idle might also be down to the crank sensor.

It will still fire up with faulty MAF, lambda or CAM sensor.

Might have an issue if the MAP sensor has died but they don't go wrong very often.

Cam belt may have slipped if it wasn't fitted correctly.

Take the car back to them and ask the question, get them to diagnose.

Is the fuel pump priming when you turn ignition on?

I had a '97 Legacy refuse to start when the MAF died.

You disconnect the MAF sensor off any Subaru and it should still start up.

It's not dependent on the MAF sensor for starting, even pre-newage cars. When the MAF sensor dies completely the ECU goes into a Speed Density type semi-limp mode as it does for a dead Lambda sensor and will still start and run.

This doesn't just apply to Subaru either.

Just speaking from experience there - MAF sensor went bung, it started running rough then wouldn't start. New MAF, back to normal.

If they can start with it disconnected I guess it must have been giving enough of the wrong signal to stop it starting rather than being completely kaput. OP could try starting his with the MAF disconnected as a simple test for that.

on older scoobs say 99 models you can fire the car with the maf disconnected.when the maf dies you can normally start the car,but it will die as soon as you touch the throttle.to test the maf dissconnect and rev the motor this will show a maf fault.have you got spark and fuel.....is she flooding etc
