I have just driven a 2004 legacy estate which I am thinking of buying as a general hack/dog crate/shed. It has done 82,000 and whist being a bit tatty around the edges drives well - but the clutch is very very heavy.

That salesman assures me they are 'all like that', but I'm of the opinion it's probably past its best.

Can anyone with experience of these cars let me have their thoughts and likely cost to change?

Thanks

Matt

My '06 Legacy has done 56000 miles and the clutch is noticeably heavier than my '99 Focus with 116k on the original clutch.

When switching between cars I feel sometimes I'm going to put my foot through the floor of the Focus, such is the relative difference. However, you get used to the weighting pretty soon.

I would try moving off in third.

Not the same car, but my Impreza clutch is like a leg press compared to my Mondeo...

After a few hundred miles your average new Subaru clutch starts to weight up, and yes they get heavy after a while however, if it's that heavy it's causing you an issue to push then i'd say it's time to get a new one. Buy uprated aftermarket like AP, Greddy, Exedy, ACT etc...

If you have deep pockets twin plate clutches are very nice and don't get heavy. I've driven a couple of scoobs now with twin plates that have done 20K-30K miles and they feel as good as a brand new single plate.
