What exactly is the car doing or not doing. Is it a general running issue or something more serious?
The reason i ask is because i'm not very far away from you in Northampton and i'm able to interrogate engine running issues via your ECU much more in-depth than standard OBD diagnostic equipment.
If you have a look at my profile you can see what i do.

Hopefully it’s not the head gasket, as I can’t see any sign of oil in the coolant / mayonnaise on the oil cap / dip stick.
But I can’t spot any obvious coolant leak from elsewhere on the system.
A sniff tester or coolant system pressuring kit i haven't got but then again that's something you could do yourself (halfords and some motor factors do both kits or get them online) saving some expense and time if you've a mind to do it yourself.
Otherwise any repair garage should be able to do the above tests for not a lot. You don't have to go to a subaru specialist for this.
All i would say to you is....While your engine is up to operating temperature and running you should have a look in the plastic expansion tank next to the radiator for bubbles. Just lift the cap with attached tube just an inch or two making sure the end of the tube is still immersed and look for bubbles. If you have a regular stream of bubbles that could be a good indicator of HGF issues.
If you have a leak in the coolant system normally the system tries to top itself up by sucking water from the expansion tank. If the water in the expansion tank keeps going down then thats a good indicator of a leak rather than HGF but then your leak could be from the water pump, heater matrix or something as simple as a hose. System needs to be pressurised to make sure.
