Having been watching scoob videos on youtube, I notice some of them have that distinctive thunder whereas others sound like a regular 4-cylinder. What's the difference in setup to achieve this?

i think any 4 banger can sound like it.. you just need very un-equal length manifolds

IMO, no Impreza with a halfway decent exhaust on it sounds like a normal 4 cylinder. That flat four Boxer burble is unmistakeable.

The standard exhaust setup, more so on the newer cars, seems to kills off a lot of the rumble (but not so much so that you can't recognise it). It's caused by the unequal length exhaust manifold (which is actually quite inefficient) and the layout of the engine. If you listen to Jap versions then owing to the fact that they use equal length pipes the rumble is eliminated, but you can still tell its a flat four.

This thread needs videos wink

Both of these from my car, which is, in my opinion, the best sounding Impreza in the world smile

Since we are on scooby sound tracks, are any of you forced to, or even choose to watch Eastenders? At almost every outdoor scene there is the distictive sound of a scoob at full chat in the distant background..........................I love it every time I hear it!!

my newage is relatively quiet even though its fully de-catted and has a full 3" syestem inc headers.

my friends classic just has a backbox and it sounds like thunder - its far too loud.

I always thought the Borla manifolds gave the lumpiest, burbliest Imprezas

Though a friend has just added a Blitz Nur Spec onto his otherwise standard Hawkeye WRX and it sounds absolutely thunderous, really accentuates the heavy "wob-wob-wob" noise low in the rev range.

I actually think it could stand a decat, but he isn't bothered about increasing the performance - yet at least. His last car was a Fiesta ST so he is probably enjoying the big performance jump. He loves loud cars though, so he might go the decat route yet. He will be blown into the weeds of the volume wars when I get my straight through system on my EP3 though, at least until he decats!
