The official Yeovil Town thread...
Discussion
This thread could set a record as the last visited thread in Pistonheads history if I'm not careful. Still, they're my club and I love them to bits so feel free to put your thoughts here and celebrate everything green and white...
Off we go then. The Carling Cup draw was kind to us yesterday and paired us with Norwich City at home in the first round. We have done reasonably well historically and had some good ties since our elevation to the League in 2003. We've beaten Plymouth at home along with Charlton and Ipswich away however we've been on the end of mini-hidings at Middlesbrough and Southampton too so we'll have to see.
The league fixtures have thrown up a fascinating first day match against Tranmere Rovers at home. Doesn't immediately sound that great but Rovers are now managed by former England star and New Order backing singer John Barnes and this will be his first competitive game in charge.
Yeovil don't have too many local derbies as geographically we're out on a limb but the two closest games are Bristol Rovers and Exeter City. We've never played Exeter in a league game as they were relegated to the Conference the year we were promoted from it so passed each other. We visit them on a Tuesday night in August with the return match in January. Bristol Rovers host us in October and visit us in March; this is my closest match as I live on the edge of Bristol.
We wind up with an away trip to the marvellous Withdean Stadium where our last boss Russell Slade will be waiting for us. The mighty Norwich make their second trip to Huish Park before Crimbo and we drive our tractors to their farm in March.
Welcome to the thread and enjoy the coming season!!

Not sure, TJK, but you can start one off if you'd like to.
Welcome, Boobles, hope you have a great season too matey...
All very quiet for week one of the thread. The manager is on honeymoon and gets back today so expect a flurry of new signings shortly. The only transfer so far confirmed the signing of Danny Hutchings from Tottenham, a teenage defender / midfielder who was on loan for 9/10 games last seaso. Quality player....

Two signings today, both in the backroom staff.
The new goalkeeping coach is Ben Roberts who has Premiership experience with both Middlesbrough and Charlton (worryingly, he's a goalie and neither of them are still in the Premiership ). He'd left well before the struggles and had actually retired at the age of 29 with a back injury.
The new physio is Simon Baker who has gradually nursed Darren Way back to fitness. Fitness as in living fitness, not playing fitness. I doubt that Darren will play for a long while, if ever. For those who don't know, the little midfield dynamo was critically injured in a car accident on December 17th breaking three of his limbs and numerous other injuries. I saw him a month ago and he's walking now but a million miles away from full fitness.

Ah well, the summer exodus continues...
Lee Peltier has joined Huddersfield subject to a medical at the Galpharm yesterday. He was a good young player, very versatile and pacy and also commiitted. He was made vice-captain last season as a result of his improving maturity.
Liverpool fans reading this thread (you never know, there might be one) will remember him as he made six appearances for the first team including a Champions League tie v Galatasaray and a thrilling 3-6 defeat to Arsenal in the Carling Cup.
Never mind, the club have made it's biggest signing of the summer today....me!!Yes, I start work for the club today in a freelance website administrator role with special responsibility for player interviews, statistical updating and match reports. Being paid to be a part of my boyhood football team? Mmmmm, nice!! I had a taster day there yesterday and mixed with the solitary first-teamer that turned up for the new kit photo shoot.....

Yeovil fan eh?
Tisdales gonna get you, Tisdales gonna get you!
You might have past us on the way up mate but we're coming back for you now. Two promotions in two years, here come The Mighty City!
errr.... actually we're only going to be any good if we actually buy some players because most of the ones we've got were with us in the Conference. Having seen the Norwich/Charlton game at the end of last season I think we'll be very lucky to stay up against quality like that. If we lose Tisdale we will go straight back down. I seriously believe the sky is the limit for that bloke, we've never had a manager like him, very tactically aware. He will be a Premiership manager within the next three years (and not with us!)
Anyway good luck for next season from a Grecian! (except of course when you play us.)

Cheers Boobles, it is a bit of a dream come true....
Hypno-Toad - not long to wait then as we have you as our second away game on the 18th August. The return game at Huish Park is on January 23rd. I've always had a secret respect for Exeter City as I watched a dozen games in their Fourth Division Championship winning season. Darran Rowbotham, Danny Bailey, Shaun Taylor et al, what a team!!
Anyway back to Yeovil then. First game of the season yesterday, a testimonial for our manager Terry Skiverton. He's been there for ten years now playing 382 games and scoring 44 goals. He picked a team of his old football mates and they played against the 2002/03 Conference winning team.
Entertaining little game really as testimonials go. It was 4-4 but there was comedy moments galore and a tear-jerking finale too.
The ref awarded a penalty with three minutes left (Skivo hadn't scored)and obviously the crowd were baying for the man himself to take it. He did but blasted it way over the bar. Ref ordered a retake ( ) and Gary Johnson (the old manager) took the ball off Skivo, placed it down and proceeded to pass it sideways to Skivo who lashed it home.
The tears and cheers came at the end when little Darren Way came on for the last minute. As I mentioned earlier, Darren was critically injured in a car accident necessitating eleven operations and he still has to wear a cast on his arm. He was in a wheelchair three months ago but the physio at the hospital has been working hard on him and he came on for the last minute yesterday. There was barely a dry eye in the house when he came on; I'm not too big to admit I cried too. He touched the ball once and immediately the ref blew for full time.
Nice end to a wonderful day.

Poole Town played a young trialist goalkeeper from Yeovil tonight in a friendly against AFC Bournemouth, not sure of his name but he did well and kept a clean sheet in the first half that he played in.
Edited to add, the keeper on loan from Yeovil who played in the first half for Poole was Jamie Beale, even the players congratulated him on his display.

Nice one, boobles. I'd forgotten all about this one!!
Scott Murray's doing okay, the manager made him club captain when he arrived. He had a spot on the sidelines with tendonitis after he got to Huish Park but has recovered now. He scored his 100th senior goal against Brighton in October, closely followed by number 101 half an hour later....
Last Tuesday against Walsall he made his 500th career appearance. I interviewed him for the matchday programme the Friday before and he's a pleasure to talk to. He was on his way to do a hospital visit to a City man who'd had a brain haemorrhage or something when I rang.
The season's going okay. Good at home and poor away pretty much sums it up. I've missed four games this season and we haven't won any of them so I feel a little better about things.

I hate football.
BUT
i love Yeovil Town. Used to watch them about 15 years ago when they were properly rubbish- the stands had about 30 supporters who thought it was more important to abuse the refs/linesman (in a mostly goodnatured west country manner) than actually support the team. Not sure they were even in the conference league back then- good luck to them i say- its a bloody impressive improvement.
