Diogo Jota killed
Discussion
"The car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car. The car set on fire, and both are confirmed to have died."
("Both" being Jota and his brother)
Quite a level of detail so soon, which is unusual. I assume because the occupants of the car they were overtaking are still alive and have provided police with the information. A tragic loss of two lives and families lives ruined forever.

Why do the reports keep mentioning overtaking? It's a dual carriageway. It's not like a scary overtake on a back road.
I wondered that too - was surprised when I saw a picture of the road. Maybe it’s just a translation thing - “passing” became overtaking? Or the lane discipline mentality is stronger there so anyone in the left lane is overtaking.

So sad, tyre blowout pretty rare for cause of fatal crash I would have thought.
RIP.
An absolute tragedy and truly devastating for those left behind. RIP.
Looking at some of the pictures of the crash scene there seems to be very little left of the car so I'm not sure what an accident investigation team will have to work with? I know there are reports of eye witnesses saying there was a tyre blowout but if it was dark I'm not sure how clearly will they have been able to see what happened unless the car was right in their headlights at the time the blowout occurred? Regardless, I just hope Diago and his brother were knocked unconscious by the impact and knew nothing of what followed...

I noticed that. They say overtaking and the natural thing you think is 20 something male in a supercar overtaking he must have been doing something reckless and been caught out.But you look at it and it's a fairly straight dual carriageway, the 'overtake' is incidental.

I also haven't seen any confirmation as to who was driving.
This morning heard a report saying there was no other car and they weren't overtaking which goes against what the police statement says. But either way - having seen the videos of the car on fire and the aftermath on social media they were clearly going at a fair old lick. Following this and the Antonio crash I wonder how long it will be before clubs start trying to clamp down on driving styles of players/their drivers with black boxes like insurance companies use.
