It's official. He's resigned. Two Euro finals and a WC semi. Despite the obvious gripes, he has to be commended on his efforts.

Seconded. I know I'm biased because he was a couple of years above me at school and I always looked up to him, right from when I first realised who the kid was who used to shoot off at the end of the day headed towards the station wearing a Crystal Palace blazer and tie instead of his school uniform. So I feel like he's "one of our own". But I do think he's been getting a bit of a bum deal recently and the way he has transformed the England team since he took over has not been recognised enough. And there is not enough credit given to Steve Holland either. That said, football is a results business and it is probably inevitable that their tenure was going to come to an end now. Hopefully whoever comes in can build on the foundation that has been laid and finally get a tournament win.

He transformed the team from consistent under-achievers, and quite frankly a difficult team to enjoy watching, to something the country could get behind with a genuine sense of optimism and enthusiasm. Personally I could watch England and feel we always were in with a chance, and 2 Euro finals, plus a WC semi and WC quarter final is a fantastic record.

There is always a hype around England, not about if we can win a major tournament, but when. Conveniently ignoring that fact there are a lot of good/better international teams out there. We don't have a divine right to win something.

Don't blame him for leaving the role. To be fair I think it's time for change, and I'm sure he'll enjoy being out of the limelight and intense pressure.

Graham Potter is 7-4 favourite to be the next permanent England manager after Gareth Southgate resigned from the job on Tuesday following the nation's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

GS did well, but given the footballers available didn't do well enough. That's a layperson's perspective, filled with dread I didn't even watch the final.

Bit sad about it really. The results are amazing unless you are deluding yourself.
My only gripe is England like a lot of teams are not entertaining. Some of the other euro 2024 games played were thrilling all action affairs.
At the end of the day I think he was trying to do a greece 2004.
No wonder Lineker was sticking the boot in. I remember how much he hated the greek approach in 2004.
I have no idea who else they should have. I predict this is the highpoint most will ever see. Some wker will take over and spout the sort of crap fans do and they will be up and down again.

I’ll admit that I’m not a football fan. That being said, I still know that England have not been a competitive side for a long time and it doesn’t take a genius to realise that loosing a manager that has taken a team to the finals twice, after a near 60 year hiatus, is not a good thing.

Results amazing ?? - as in hopeless and depressing ?.
Boring as hell most of the time, no idea how they got in the final.

His results sheet isn't that bad, plenty of wins and draws rather than losses but every game seemed like England were on a knife edge, hoping for a goal at some point to nudge them over the line. Matches were often dreary, unexciting, sideways passing back and forward.

The worry is that a new, exciting coach will change that all around, the team will go all out attack and get beat by clever sides getting through a weaker defence. Time will tell I suppose, what is needed is a thorough rethink on the players chosen to represent the country. Too many "old-timers", skillful maybe but often too slow or too tired by 60 mins. There's a wealth of on form young talent, some on the bench during Euro 24, who should have been starting not sitting around hoping for 5 mins at the end of the game or watching at home on TV.

Yep, the intense pressure for a month every 2 years must be an absolute nightmare for £6m a year. Not sure how he managed it..

What has that got to do with "intense pressure"?

His squad essentially picks itself from the best players the country has to offer, he coaches a game every few months and gets judged on his performance every 2 years. Compared to managing a PL team it's a walk in the park, hence why so many international positions are taken up by failed club managers and retirees.
