Why are football players wages quoted at a weekly amount?

It goes way back id say even to the 50's when Stanley Matthews would probably have received £2 in an envelope each Friday.

But it's not moved on. Why is this

Do agents negotiate a weekly amount for there clients?

Just musing on a quiet day

No idea. Maybe a bit of smoke and mirrors in the hope people don't do the maths and see the annual amount they are paid instead.

After listening to a Ben Foster podcast he confirmed they are paid monthly wobble

Google suggests that back in the 60’s the FA had a weekly cap on wages. So traditionally it’s always been quoted as a weekly wage. They obviously get paid monthly.

Maybe because the weekly wage would look even more ridiculous!

They still say things like "the gaffer" and "the manager" when trying to string a sentence together. Keeps it all simple for their simple little minds.

I wish I could be "simple" enough to earn £300k a week.

It's a generic way of looking at footballers "value" or "worth" & provides a relatively easy way to compare/get irritated about - "why the fk are we paying X £85k P/W when he's sat of the bench".

Although it's never a true picture as top level players are able to generate very significant additional monies from sponsorships, clothing ranges, image rights, video games etc, etc.

Similar to the use of London buses or football pitches as a basis of measurement for anything large.

For property salaries check out MLB & Shohei Ohtani's $700M deal to join the LA Dodgers - approx. $1.3m P/W (although he's deferred the bulk of payments for a number of years).

Saw an interesting piece on a youtube video. Matt Le Tissier playing golf and talking about wages

He signed on as a YTS on £26 a week. His first pro contract was £100 a week and went up to £120 in year 2.

When he finished as a top earner at Southampton, he was on £3.5k a week in 2002. Although he did acknowledge that Southampton had one of the smaller budgets in the league. That's £182k a year!

Even with a squad of 40 on that top whack would be a wage bill of just over £7 million. In contrast last year City posted an annual wage bill of £422 million and Man United were at £330 million!

Just goes to show the ridiculous inflation of the last 20 years

Adjusted for inflation he would have been paid circa £320k per annum - which coincidentally is currently the median League One salary.
