Not sure if there is any room left for nails in the coffin of football.

Didn't watch the Qatar world cup, barely watch the prem anymore.

Love of football is fading quite quick. Have enjoyed going to watch my local non-league team a couple of times lately though.

Not quite as stupid as Saudi hosting the Winter Asian Games in 2029 in a city which doesn't exist yet. Not quite, but nearly.

I fell certain the local climate won't be an issue for either event.

It does snow there, to be fair. China had the big air event at an old steel mill and Sochi was a coastal resort so local climate not always relevant these days.

I think the Saudi regime is fairly despicable.

However, given some of the other despicable regimes that have hosted recent sports competitions, why is this any worse?

It seems a bit hypocritical to do $$$billions in trade with the Saudis and then get offended about them hosting the WC.

No one wants to bid for these huge tournaments. They're far too expensive and disruptive.

Let the despots and sportwashing regimes pick up the tab.

No one has changed their opinion of Qatar post WC.

I think we are long past the point of no return now. SA are heavily involved in too many sports and are too established to reverse the trend.

I decided not to be drawn in to the Qatar production, and it was surprisingly easy to avoid it.
If you don't watch the opening matches it loses its appeal, I think. You don't get caught up in the hype.

Ignoring Saudi Arabia's marketing festival will be a pleasure.

Indeed, quite literally in this case as Saudi Arabia are the only bidder.

I'm not sure what else FIFA can do in that situation, at least in the short term. It's probably too soon to make any drastic changes to how the WC is run to open it up to nations that don't have eleventy billion dollars to host it, but if as it stands the economic benefits don't outweigh the costs we're kinda stuck with tournaments in questionable places (or across 5 countries).

Many European countries could host a stripped-down tournament with existing facilities and infrastructure, Australia could probably have done so too, but that's not how FIFA run the tournament as it stands.

In purely footballing terms, London alone could host a WC without noticing. Let alone England.

It's the accompanying bks that complicates matters.

Like it or not it's happening. Noone is a fan of the Saudis, or Qatar for that matter, however the amount they invest in our everyday tech is crazy. You're using Saudi funded infrastructure daily, and noone cares. If you care about them hosting the world cup, then youre just a media led idiot.

Well, given that SA were the only bidders for 2034......FIFA now have a decade to decide to what to do about the World Cup beyond that, as it highly likely there will be no one queuing up for bidding for the 2038 WC rofl
Can an organisation as corrupt as FIFA look to more slimmed down WC, or will the $$$$ blind them to continuing down the rabbit hole?

Football gone the same way as F1 then.

Despite watching every f1 season since childhood, I haven’t seen a race for a few years now, partially due to how involved these scummy countries are, and the terrible races that come with it diluting the whole thing.

No doubt everything will need Air Con, massive single-use airports and stadiums to be built in entirely unsuitable locations, and our govt will just go along with it.

Yet we have to drink from paper straws cos environment.

Meh.

Will probably watch.

I haven't watched F1 since end of 2017 season.......completely switched off mentally from it, don't even bother to look at results or anything.....couldn't even tell you who even won the Championships since, well other than this year, as I overheard some people talking about it, and didn't have much choice in the matter laugh

As for watching in 2034, that's 10 years away, and at my age......well..... laugh
