Can anyone give me a definitive answer to this question please ?

A high pressure game and a penalty is given in the last minute. Kicker runs up but at the final stride he deliberately misses the ball and wheels away. He does not touch the ball. He tells the Ref' that his nerve went due to the pressure. What does the Ref' do ?
Does he allow another player to take the penalty or award a free kick to the defending side for ...??? or what ?

Thanks
Brian.

Penalty hasn't been taken as ball hasn't been touched.
so not a 'retake' but set up & go again.

If intent to deceive then indirect free kick to the other team. Otherwise a different player is nominated to take the penalty.

This, I believe, is correct. A single kicker has to be identified. So if the kicker missed the ball, then you would reset with the next identifed kicker. This can be the same as the first one. If they missed again, you can start looking at sanctions for delaying the restart of play and unsporting behaviour.

It would be very likely to be deemed an Illegal Feint. So Yellow card to the kicker and re start with an indirect free kick to the defending side.

Deliberately missing would be a feint, which is an offense.

If a different player is going to take the pen, he must pick the ball up off the spot and re spot it. The player who places the ball on the pen spot must be the player to take the pen.
