John Motson has died

10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup Finals.
That's quite the epitaph for a football man, what a fascinating career he had.
I once saw an interview with him where he showed the massive amount of research he put into every game, copious handwritten notes about players that he could seemingly recall with ease.

John Motson dined at the very top table of commentators with the likes of John Arlott, Peter Alliss, Eddie Butler, Dan Maskell and Murray Walker.
All sadly gone now and upstairs watching down with no one being able to get a word in edgeways!
Interviewed him in 2009 for the Yeovil Town programme and met him three years ago at Villa Park where he was doing a radio com. An incredibly knowledgeable man who was ultra professional in his career.
Rest in peace, Motty and thanks for the memories.

The voice of football for my generation.
I met him once. It was in a bar at Lord’s cricket ground during a rain delay. We chatted about football and cricket for a bit and he was a gent. His reputation for encyclopaedic knowledge was well founded - I mentioned that an uncle of mine had played for Charlton Athletic in the 1950s and he correctly recalled what position he played and that he had represented England at under 23 level! What a pro.

I remember when it was essentially just him and Barry Davies. RIP - all sheepskin coats should now be retired!
It certainly was, on the BBC. The ITV ones people heard very much depended on where they lived - ITV was very regional back then, with different commentators on their different footy coverage.Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
