Read this several times today

Think it was a great game and worthy of a final , one of the better finals where often the bar has been set low with the weight of what’s on offer and from the first french penalty first rate entertainment

Would not put it in the ranks of best every though. Why?

Only 3 goals in 130 mins of play came from open play. The game looked all but over for France until the 80th minute so we had 50 minutes of play when Arg were 2-0 up relatively free of much.

the game was decided by penalties , hard for me to say the greatest ever final ended up being decided by a shoot out.

Hats off to Mbappe though for his trick and the way he took his penalties 3/3

France were pish for almost 80 mins, if that's what it takes to be a classic then so be it, otherwise it was entertaining and that's it.

Dramatic, exciting at the death, but in no way a classic. Poor performance from France for the vast majority of the 90 minute match, then they took advantage of a tiring Argentina side. The headlines will go to Messi for what it means in the overall scheme of things, Mbappe’s excellent hattrick will fall away as a footnote.

I’ve said so elsewhere, but this match summed up the whole tournament for me. Dramatic in parts, largely poor football on display, but the drama will be remembered and dressed up as the whole competition.

Yep, best final ever (well, of all the ones I've seen that is).

Best ever is a relative measure of ‘goodness’, not absolute.

One of the best in my lifetime, especially 2nd half and extra time.

Loads of drama just adding to it.

I would say the 1966 Final was better. Very similar in many ways but settled without the need for a penalty shoot out (which didn't exist back then) - and a bona fide hat trick with all goals scored from open play. It's just so far back in time now that people are beginning to forget it.

Best one I’ve seen, especially when France entered the game in the second half. Can’t go wrong with a penalty shootout if you’re a neutral sat on your armchair. Also, two of the world’s greatest players going head to head, doing their stuff and both delivering. Great stuff!

Not me. I watched it in full last year. You know that feeling of slight motion you get when the train you're on pulls into a station? It's like that,

Context is everything. That was how the game was played back then. This match was highly sophisticated for the sixties.

Plus, the odds are that you already knew the result of the '66 final. yes

I'd say so for me as well.
I think the poor showing from France for most part of the game made it even better in the end.

There was no expectation, they seemed dead and buried and hadn't created anything so you were probably were thinking this is routine now until the final whistle.

Then all of a sudden France score and your like hello and then they do it again straight after and then it's just back and forth until the pens with some great goals, near misses, saves with both of them going at it.

Very exciting, if one of those teams were England that were playing instead, I don't even know how I'd have reacted.

Finals tend to be tense affairs, without a lot of flair. People want to win, but really don't want to lose and good teams can cancel each other out. This isn't symptomatic of just the World Cup - it happens in the Champions League often too.

Prior to 2018, the previous 2 finals only had 1 goal scored in extra time and in 2006 Italy won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

It was a great game, really enjoyed it and good to see the little guy get his World Cup - one can't say his career didn't deserve it.

Also no subs back then meant, 120 mins of trotting around kicking a heavy ole lump of a ball.

Best World Cup Final I have watched.

Certainly not the best ‘final’ though.

That’s clearly the 1998 Playoff final which finished Charlton 4 - 4 Sunderland with Charlton winning 7-6 on penalties.

I'd say it was the best final I've seen (remember them "live" since '86).

Yes, France were very poor in the first half, but Argentina pushed them onto the ropes.

Argentina then stood off. Tiredness? Manager telling them to go defensive? Who knows. The French changes really started to make a difference at that point.

I thought the reffing was pretty good, considering what we've seen elsewhere in this tournament.

Would have preferred to see the game decided in open play, but in games of this size, between two teams like this, that's probably asking too much.

Glad the result went the way it did. Agree Infantino was a prat at the end, but after all the stick the behind the scenes of the tournament got, he must have been massively relieved too.

Ignoring the politics, I think this one will go down as a memorable tournament, and the final one of the best ever.

Definitely the best final of a major international tournament I've seen. Incredible drama right until the death. Yes, France never showed up until the 75th minute, but that doesn't take away from it.

1986 FINAL in Mexico was very good too, apparently.

Shades of yesterday, as Argentina were 2-0 up against Germany (not East), pegged back to 2-2, but managed to succumb in the end.

Made be best from a late drama perspective, although '66 was probably more so as West Germany equalised in the last minute of normal time....!

Best final from a watching pov for me, was the '70 Final, didn't have the drama, but from a pure football pov, not much has been better since.
