Simple question; if you support one football team, why?

Feel free to add another reason to this poll if you have one....

(this is a spin off from another thread)

My mum worked with the mother of one of the players.

I thought one of the team looked cute on his football card pic.

How about "not supporting a gloryhunters' team that everyone else was supporting" ... at the time (80s) that was Liverpool.

It should be, and always and forever, and no excuses, the team of the town or city where you or your father were born. None of this selecting a team because of form or the colour of the strip.

I was born in Norwich, Never any doubt about my choice even though they were in the 3rd Division South at the time. Is this modern fad to pick a team in the Premier League top six some side-effect of entitlement culture?

I don't think it's a modern fad to want to support a team at the highest level of the pyramid, to see the best quality of football, to support the players who were heros to a little boy.
I was born in one of the few counties in the country which didn't have a professional football team let alone one in the first division. It was only natural to align with a top level team that played in my favourite colour and had some cool players.

I did it the proper way.

Took a map, a ruler, measured to find the closest league football club to where I was born.

That's your team, like it or not smile

I'm from east Kent, support Liverpool. Anyone who knows the area will be aware of the distinct lack of football teams, there was Gillingham, Maidstone (that folded but back now), Dover or Margate plus a few non league

I have no more in common with Charlton, Millwall or any SE London clubs 60 miles away than I do with Scourers but did spend a lot of time in the NW due to family connections. However try telling someone from the north or midlands that and they struggle to understand the lack of 20+ clubs in a 30 mile radius.

I probably started supporting them because they were the best at the time and probably as Dad is Man U but the lack of football in my area definitely played a part. For the record I did support Maidstone as I was born there, until they closed. Not been so interested recently as don't live there now

My parents moved to Portsmouth (well, Havant to be precise) when I was seven years old. My Dad was originally from Portsmouth. I saw my first game at Fratton Park when I was nine, and that was that. I've never moved far away and have followed the team, home and away, through thick and thin (mostly thin) for fifty years now.

I also love the city and the people, though Portsmouth (the place) is an acquired taste I admit. I also follow England, obviously, and Havant & Waterlooville who are in National League South.

Being in Aus, my version of football is AFL.

Born in Geelong, so that's my team.

When they won the premiership in 2007, I rang my sister in the US to tell her, as this was the first one they had won since she was born!

My birth town as well so always supported them.

I now live completely surrounded by Ipswich Town supporters.

I was born and bred Slough but had an aunt in Plumstead where we would spend a lot of time as kids, especially half terms etc. All the locals were Arsenal mad. Even going into the local pubs with my dad, it was Arsenal fever; all the talk of Liam Brady, Kenny Sansom, Pat Rice, Frank Stapleton, Charlie George et al was hard not to like.

Jeez. That's bad. The Scum. However, I fully respect that that's the way it should be if they were born in Ipswich or the surrounding area. Respect in that respect.
