Not big-time, local and non-league. My mate is involved in football and is a real pain to refa and liners. I've noticed that his teams do seem to get a lot of decisions go against them. I wouldn't blame them if they shared details of "awkward" coaches over a pint or a what's app group and perhaps go into a game expecting him to be difficult. They're only human. I think if he was less, err, outspoken, he may get a fairer shake.

Any refs with an insight
?

Yes, your mate has a false expectation that every decision should go in his favour. It is just as simple as that. Does the league not promote a ‘Respect the Officials’ approach?
Maybe your mate could do a refereeing course, or volunteer as a lino, then he will see things more neutrally.

I reffed a couple of games as a favour when some sunday league sides had late drop outs.

Even though they understood I wasn't a ref, i'd had a chat with the captains before to say i'd do my best but st was still going to be wrong, I got a shed load of abuse and rage directed at me. Gave back what I got though tbf.

Had to give a red card for a last man challenge too!

Why anybody would want to be a football referee is beyond me.

Both my boys qualified at 14 (the minimum age) and reffed to aged about 19. My youngest got 4 A levels, good grades, but didn't want to do uni, but wanted an apprenticeship that involved computing and maths.

He applied to various schemes but one opportunity stood out over all others, with a world famous organisation in the entertainment industry, based in C. London. He sent in his c.v., which included his referring work, and got an interview. The interview lasted an hour, of which he said about 50 mins was talking about football and his experiences as a ref, defusing difficult situations, showing authority, leading his team of linesmen etc.

He got the job, and apparently there were 250 applications and about 15 were called for interview. He has been there 6 years now, various promotions, has a great career in a glamourous industry.

So there's one reason. But a bit of a thread derail.

Back on topic, there were a couple of teams in his West London league where the managers were absolute s. He always hoped they'd lose but never let that effect his decisions.
