I’ve been annoyed at the obsession that comes with slow tippy, tappy, sideways & backwards football, but today seems to be breaking all records. At the half way point in the following matches these are the main stats:

Liverpool : 60% possession 2 shots on target (both goals)
Chelsea: 75% possession 0 shots on target
Man City: 76% possession 1 shot on target
Celtic: 86% possession 0 shots on target

How can this be fun for anyone to watch? I’m flicking between some of the matches and they are absolutely dreadful. The teams would rather pass the ball back to their keeper than even attempt to score a goal.

Maybe the teams that they're playing have some culpability in this.

Content to stick 11 players behind the ball and hope to nick a breakaway rather than get rolled over against the big teams does not often make an exciting game.

Maybe, but with that much possession, you’d expect a decent team to be able to at least muster a couple of shots on target. It’s up to the “bigger” teams to take the game to the opposition.

Just to add Brighton have equalised and from 30% possession have managed 6 on target attempts which is double what Liverpool have managed from 70% possession.

Tippy tappy isn't ruining football, VAR is.

Also allowing murderous regimes to buy clubs. I wonder what a prospective owner would have to do to fail a 'fit and proper person' test

But they’re the only only of the four that I picked tat have succeeded and they’ve upped their shot rate to 6 on target to get there. Amazing what can happen when a team tries to score hehe

You can add poor sportsmanship, blatant cheating, contesting every decision, too much money, too many prima donnas, ridiculous celebrations for every goal, stupid hair styles, too many tattoos, lack of intelligence, racist fans, too expensive.....

but I don't want to go on too much.

100% this. It’s been destroyed. Nothing remotely enjoyable about any of it anymore.

It’s gotta be better than what your lot are playing at Old Trafford. At least it gets results across a season.

Try lower league football. Thankfully it hasn't filtered that far down the leagues

All of the stuff that’s being raised may well have a point, although some of it is a stretch. However to put the stats up at full time

Liverpool 59% possession 3 shots on target
Chelsea 80% possession 6 shots on target
Man City 68% possession 3 shots on target
Celtic 85% possession 2 shots on target

Of all of the above only Chelsea really upped their game and they won comfortably by actually trying to score. Liverpool conceded two after halftime, City had a couple of tame efforts and Celtic only had a missed penalty on target to show for all their possession.

I know it’s a small sample of a few games over one weekend, but someone in football must have the ability to work out how to win games like these.

I enjoy it when the teams that do t have much of the ball do a smash and grab and it sticks it to the boring tippy / tappy rubbish. I include my team losing when they’re playing crap football like this too.

For balance this is the regime the U.K. sell arms to. Not sure we can ask sport to have a higher moral compass than an elected government.

My team are st. They play this atrocious football without having any hint of ability to do so. I hate watching this glacial placed tippy tappy crap.

Well, why not watch one of the other games available then? Burnley Brentford had 20 attempts and wouldn’t have you seething with jealousy.

I’m not sure what your problem is, but there’s no jealousy. I’m pointing out the style of football that seems to be more and more prevalent in football and my opinion of how dull it is.

I was flicking between games as I stated above and these matches were the ones that should have been quite good to watch.

Perhaps PL pitches are just too perfect now, with their immaculate flat grass all season.
There's no risk rolling the ball around; you couldn't have done that (say) 30 years ago with bare mud, ruts and divots.

Anyway to more properly answer the notion that tippy tappy football is destroying the game is so absurd it’s contemptible. Some of the greatest teams in footballs history have used this style of football to enormous success. It is important to remember it is primarily a sport and not an entertainment show, if you want the reverse try WWE.

What is destroying the game is things like the previous poster alluded too. Also people like the Glaziers, FSG, Ambramovic, Agnelli etc who see it as a pure business. The super rich clubs are destroying the sport which was seen most keenly with the Super League crap and is seen in the champions league which now heavily favours a few countries instead of smaller leagues clubs having a chance.
