A good thread detailing the issues as Laporta does a presser https://twitter.com/GuillemBalague/status/14235711...

Wages 110% of income, and sounds like was deal to do a 50 year mortgage with league.

Mad way to run any club. No wonder they're so keen on the ESL.

Crazy that they have 4 top players coming in that they can't even register until they shift half the squad. Madness.

So, £140m spent thus far in the last few weeks. So much for them having financial issues. smile

FFP was a roaring success wasn’t it.
This sort of thing is the equivalent of financial doping.

Massive debt, owe players money, but still able to spend huge amounts of money. It is totally wrong.

Lewandowski is a world class player, but he's 34 in a few weeks and Barcelona have given him a massive contract for 4 years.

I think it’s fairly well documented how they have financed the current window and how it technically adheres to FFP. It really does scream all in on red/black though! Not sure where they go if it doesn’t work as they have sold a fair chunk of future income and as pointed out spent a good portion on an older player.

They are rolling the dice at the moment with the clubs finances, especially with getting money now against future earnings.

What benefits Barca is that they are in a weak league and therefore should be able to get into CL each season for that additional funding.

I didn’t realise they still owe Messi wages, from when he deferred.

How is the La Liga a weak league?

I know there are some good teams in La Liga (Sevilla and Valencia) but if you look at the history then Barca / A Madrid and R Madrid can pretty gurantee they will get CL.

There’s only 2 teams in it. It’s Scotland with suntans.

Quality and resources in La Liga tails off dramatically after the top 5 or so.

From what I understand they don't share the loot as much as we do in the EPL, which is part of the issue.

Isn't that the same for the top teams in most divisions with 4 CL slots?

Real are not as strong as previous, but they just beat Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool to win the CL.

That's 1 more team than will be competing for the EPL this season. laugh

The quality of the EPL drops off dramatically after the top 2 sides. Man City and Liverpool and in a different league to the rest of the teams. There is 3/4 teams in a window behind and then a mid-table of average teams.

The depth of the EPL isn't as strong as people make out.

Does it? Maybe last season. Season before Liverpool only made top 4 by the skin of their teeth.

City I agree though have distorted things with their financial doping.

I think the depth point might be being misunderstood. I tend to think of it more as the bottom 3/5/10 teams in a league compared to the same in other leagues and how that matches up. Typically other leagues have some rather poorer teams in that part that the PL has due to the vast differences in finances. Meaning the matches across the season are generally of a higher difficulty rather than meaning anyone could win.

That isn’t to say there isn’t a group of 2/5/7 teams at the top who match up quite evenly or even that the league isn’t dominated by a couple of teams at all. smile

Hopefully that makes sense and isn’t just work soup…

Football quality generally is not very good at the moment .
Madrid winning the champs league should be considered as big a miracle as any in football because I have never seen a team so outplayed in so many matches win such a difficult competition .
Unfortunately Mancheater city are a fantastic team ,head and shoulders above everyone else currently as they should be ,Liverpool have done exceptional to get close to them but after that I m struggling to think of any team that is decent ,the traditional giants are all pale imitations of their former selves .
It’s also why a quite mediocre england team have done so well recently .

The season before that they won the league by a margin. 2020/21 was a poor season, they only got 69 points, and it was still good enough for 3rd. Is it 6 or 7 years consistently in the top 4? They are an established top 4 side and it would be a massive shock if they didn't finish in the top 4 this season.

How far back before City failed to finish top 4? Chelsea are there most of the time apart from the seasons they have downed tools.

It's the same teams on a regular basis making the top 4. It's the same teams people are predicting to be top 4 again.

You don't judge the strength of a league based on it's strongest teams but it's weakest.

Leeds for example, finished 17th last year, just avoiding relegation. With a multinational squad, full of internationals, including Raphina and Philips. And a squad value of £280m

Compare that to La Liga, where Cadiz finished 17th. A squad almost entirely made up of Spanish players and valued at £51m

Or France, Clermont finished 17th, market Value £25m

Germany, Stuttgart, £140m

Italy, Salernitana, £43m

Holland, Fortuna Sittard, £14m

Belgium, Eupen, £11m

Scotland, Saint Mirren, £7m.....

Even Norwich who came bottom have a squad worth in excess of £100m
