If anyone ever wondered why there is a disparity, things like this don't exaclty help to they?

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/nov/07/a...

In a nutshell: girls football academies closed due to covid, boys allowed to carry on.
No wonder the gap never closes.

To call it elite is a bit of a joke, but then that goes for the boys teams too.

They should just call themselves a school.

Always surprises me there isn't more of a push to coincide womens big games/tournaments with womens. E.g. have the world cup at the same time, in the same country. Tennis has shown that model can work and there are differences with football for sure, but it seems to worth trying to generate more interest.

As to COVID shutting down outdoor sport for a highly dubious lockdown is ridiculous. Should all be open.

Women's football is exactly like mens football only on Xanax. It's like watching football in slow motion it's so dull.

I said that once in front of my sister and mother who both agreed it was a poor imitation of the mens game.

I mean I'm all for girls playing the same sport as men but the fact the BBC have thrust it onto mainstream TV after Match of The Day. They are trying to make it as exciting as the Mens game buts it's all a bit embarrassing, the WSL never be the same at the EPL and most women agree.

Yeah, because if you cancel girls training and not the boys, what exactly do you think the effect is?

Whilst they are not given the same opportunities as the boys, it won't be will it? It's not exactly rocket science, unless you somehow think quality football is only playable by men.

It just isn’t the same quality & is due to various factors over & above shutting down the training sessions.

Yes. Needs smaller pitches and goals

I agree it’s dull. And the objective standard is poor. But I’m all for girls having some sports role models to encourage them

Totally agree, smaller pitches & goals, but this will never get past the PC crowd.

Alex Morgan and Messi are the same height. I suppose Messi needs those smaller pitches too.

So it's nothing to do with stature but all to do with skill, something you get through practice and training.

So cancelling the girls training and keeping the boys on seems a bit self perpetuating, no?

It’s to do with speed and power

It’s visually very obviously a second rate spectacle vs men’s football. And would be much less the case if it had smaller goals and pitches. Football as a spectacle doesn’t benefit from a slower game in the way it’s sometimes said tennis does

Is the thread title helpful?

Anyway, I amazed it's even legal to allow one and not the other. Even if it is legal it's surely and own-goal in the same way that arguing with Marcus Rashford is.

I don't watch it, but its existence and promotion doesn't make me as unreasonably angry as it seems to do to some people

Joining the world cups together would be a good idea though. Would definitely raise the excitement, and two finals on a weekend (a la Wimbledon) would be cracking.

I like women, and I like football, so women's football is good with me.

The standard is way below the men but so what. McEnroe said Serena Williams would be lucky to beat any man in the top 700, and he's probably right. But she's still a legend. To be a pro footballer, and maybe an international footballer, is a fantastic achievement, man or woman.

I'll always support the Chelsea and England women's football teams, and watch when they're on tv. Because they are playing football for Chelsea or England and that's good enough for me.
