On the back of Jack Wilshere looking for a new club there is lot of internet chat along the lines of "only sign him on a pay as you play deal".

Does that kind of deal ever happen? The only example of a well known player accepting a pay as you play deal is John Terry when he was in the twilight of his career at Chelsea, as was due to his age as opposed to his injury record (He played quite a bit an earned quite a lot).

For example in the past there is lots of talk about Owen Hargreaves being offered a pay as you play deal but I can't find any evidence he ever signed one.

I'm sure Andy Carroll was on that kind of contract last year and the back end of the year before. I'm assuming there is a base wage paid and then a bigger appearance bonus to bring them up to where they 'should' be.

Yep agree with that. I presume the basic is pretty low and then topped up with lots of incentives. The amount of stories you hear of injury prone players signing great deals that never bloody play. Wilshere, Diaby, Carroll, Rodwell spring to mind.

You would be crazy to sign these players with out those protections.
