Sad news.

Met him at Newcastle airport one Monday morning. As we were both flying to Dublin. A huge, imposing bloke yet spoke with such softness in his voice.

One of the greats.

96 goals for Leeds. Not bad for a centre back!

Wonder if they'll bury his "little black book" with him?

One of the greats, loved his fishing as much as his football.

Sadly his relationship with brother Bobby was rather strained.

A big man in every sense of the word, who didn't suffer fools gladly.

Few, if any sporting figures made as big an impact on Irish life as Jack Charlton.

Rest in peace Big Jack and thanks for such wonderful memories.

When I was checking into a hotel in Manchester 10 years ago I noticed Jack also checking In with another receptionist. The following morning when I was checking out Jack was there again doing the same. The hotel charged from memory £10 or £20 for their secure underground car park which I thought was reasonable but Jack thought otherwise. I paid & left Jack still there arguing over the unfair parking charge.

I liked him a lot but thought he was a tight ******.

I wonder who the second most popular was, Eric? smile

When you get to a certain age, it is truly sobering how the characters you have grown up with and followed their careers all drop off the map. As the poet said, "each man's death diminishes me."

His meaness was legendery. When he was the Republic of Ireland manager, when in Ireland, if say the bar or restaurant bill came to £50, he'd ask for £40 cash back and do a cheque for £90. He always went up to £90 something, never £100. He'd worked out that below £100, 95% of bar and restaurant owners wouldn't cash the cheque, but put it in a frame on the wall. £100+, they would cash it. All over the Irish Republic, pubs have Jackie Charlton cheques on the wall, always between £90-99, and you know he'd had free food & drinks plus got some cash off the owner!!

Another story involves him berating a player in the dressing room, and telling him he was the worst player in the team. And the player replied "maybe I am, but at least I'm the best player in my family!"

Jackie Charlton was a good player, not a great one. He played in the second tier for a lot of his career, and he certainly wasn't the Virgil van Dyke of his day. But he was a perfect fit for the 66 WC team. One of Sir Alf's talents was to know what would work in the team, and that resulted in not always picking the best players. But ending up with the best team.

well that says not a lot, I thought he always came across as perpetually chewing a wasp.

Mean and cheerless, in stark opposition to his brother.
