The media would like nothing better than for a high profile player to come out as gay so they can persecute him and make his life a misery . Justin Fashanu committed suicide because he couldn't take the pressure did he not ....there was a court case involving a 17yr old in the States
I'm sure there's so called journalists going through bins looking for any evidence so they can be the ones to break the story.
Gay footballers must be looking over their shoulders .
So,why don't they all get together, write a letter, something along the lines of .....all the undersigned would like it known that we are gay and there will be no further comment by any of us..... and release it the press .
Would it work ?

Sadly because they would get absolutely slaughtered by the crowds. It’d allegedly all be in the name of “bantz” but I can’t imagine many people have the mental fortitude to withstand being ridiculed by thousands of people week in, week out for no good reason.

My brother was extremely disappointed when he came out.

Why?

Because no one gave a fk.

I think it's a similar story with many. Sports stars, musicians, actors etc. All worried about 'what ifs' when in fact the support they get goes through the roof.

There being no crowds atm it would be the ideal time.....plus it's hard for the fans to justify it being banter if there are gay players in their own team

You’re crediting football crowds with being more logical than they are.

Lots of players are ridiculed week in week out. The stick Wayne Rooney gets week in, week out doesn't seem to have broken him.

Would someone get stick for being gay? There would probably be the odd case of homophobia but I doubt you'd get a 30,000+ crowd acting in unison attacking them.

if you are gay and a footballer there might well be positives to be the first to come out. It would I expect raise their profile and lead to opportunities when their playing career finished.

The players may be front page for a day but its the fans that are the long term issue. banter between mates is one thing, abuse from 30k opposing fans is another.

I think assuming 30k opposing fans will be chanting abuse is a bit sensationalist.

There will be small groups but doubt very much the entire rival teams supporters will be giving abuse.

But I'm not suggesting 1 player comes out, I'm suggesting dozens, hundreds, who knows how many, all come out at the same time.
Safety in numbers and all that

Given that there openly gay rugby players and cricketers and no football players says a lot. As much as society in general doesn’t care, I think football fans and, more so, players are a bit behind the times on this.

The PGA Tour has yet to have any openly gay golfers.

I can't see golf fans caring much if a golfer is gay or not so what's their reason for not coming out?

I don't think you quite get the stick that players get when they're the opposition or even if they're not.

It's not just crowd chanting. Players get stick in the street when they're not playing well or if they've made poor decisions - even from their own fans. If they're from a rival, they can't go to some places in town. It lasts a lifetime.

Think I'm being dramatic? Try being Sol Campbell and heading to a Spurs pub, even now. Or Michael Owen visiting Anfield.

If a player came out as gay, it wouldn't necessarily be the 30k fans that'd be the problem. It would be the few fans, getting in your face, shouting abuse at you both at the ground and when you're out and about. Every. Single. Day.

Fans are so tribal that a 'weakness' like being of a different sexuality would be seized upon and used as a tool abusively.

Football is quite a gay sport anyway, so what's the big deal.

First one to come out will make a fortune and then loads of others will have the confidence to do it also.

What is the average age of the FA association top team.

Are the people in charge of football from an era of tolerance. Anyone that came out would be vilified by fans and managers, the fans still chant racist stuff, less, but it hasn't gone away.

Do you really think football fans would happily accept an openly gay player?[url]

Anyway, to answer this question, no it wouldn't work.

A refusal to make further comment would lead to hounding by the media and if they wouldn't talk, they'd find ex-partners, friends, family, anyone and get them to talk.

Plus, what's the point in coming out if they won't talk about it?
