I’m surprised a club haven’t done this (as far as I’m aware) in any of the top 4 divisions.

It’d strike me as a good time to set a marker down if you wanted to reduce your wage bill.

Perhaps clubs aren’t as stretched as they make out.

Any thoughts?

If they furlough a player they can't do any work related activities - including following a fitness plan.

I also suspect it won't help future transfer and contract negotiations!

They were in discussions for paycuts, so imagine the contracts are more negotiated than your average employee one.

Plus they have a players union.

Remember its not like a normal employee who changes jobs. These are tangible assets that are bought and sold and have a value.

Alexi Sanchez (as an example)

No ones gonna buy him, he’s on £300,000 a week apparently.

Why can’t he be furloughed?

They are contracted not employed, (although the vast majority will receive pay via UK PAYE), they are not PAYE 'employees', in fact they are assets that are depreciated on a balance sheet, eg a 30 million £ signing on a 3 yr contact is 10 mill a yr on write down.

No pay = no contract, free agent...

From what I have read there is a risk of being in breach of contract and players simply leaving

Then there is the morally corrupt side of things

As an example the Leeds United players voluntarily deferred wages so that the club would not have to lay off any of the club's 250 staff

Other clubs are calling for transfer embargoes against the club for not being able to pay all of their bills because of it

Say you have a top four club PLAYER wage bill of 300million pa +, and income OVERALL of 40 million a month, the income stopped completely in March, and you only had 100m in the bank, and the tv companies now want 40m back, and you can't sell tickets because no fans...

Choices eh....
