His contract is not being renewed this summer, after 45 years

Unbelieveable, what an absolute legend..

Mark Pougatch and Cornelius Lysaght (horse racing) also being ditched by R5L, replacing with younger people to reach out to a new, younger audience. Some of the presenters R5L now employ are fking useless, have very little knowledge and their journalistic and presentation skills are limited to reading out social media posts. They'll be needing a new, younger audience if they carry on alienating their traditional audience like this.

Whilst I quite like Alan Green, I'm not in favour of this "after 45 years" stuff. It's a business contract, Green has done a good job for the BBC, and the BBC have paid him for the privilege. Either party is perfectly entitled to say "time to call it a day". Whether or not the BBC are making the right call remains to be seen.

BBC sports reporting/presenting/commentary teams are crap now, anyway. Every one has to have a quota of people who are o my.here to fit the PC profile required. If you're over 45 white and a male with significant experience of a sport, you have little chance of remaining in post, because there'll be a 1 legged minority coloured LGBTQWERTY midget who once did CBBC ahead of you in the queue.

Shame. i think he's great, and i say that as a United fan.

A lot of R5L long timers seem to be being ditched. Mickey Clark from Wake up to Money was/is another legend who's been let go.

Women commentators doing football do make my toes curl.

It sounds like they are reading from a script and have no 'excitement' when a goal is scored just a false bit of enthusiasm

I don't mind the ones on Sky as they just give a quick recap several times during a game and describe what has happened so far

But full game ones no thanks, i turn the sound down, and using a radio trends to bugger my enjoyment!!

I doubt they'll be replacing Cornelius, their coverage of horse racing has declined massively over the last 5+ years; there was a time when there would be early morning racing previews before 7 o'clock.
And has already been stated Mickey Clarke of Wake Up to Money has gone; who along with Cornelius, has been on 5Live since the start. There seems to be an agenda at 5Live, and the talented presenters are being let go. There are times now when it's un-listenable. There was a time when a BBC sports reporter/presenter/correspondent had some gravitas - you might not always agree, but they knew their subject inside out. That isn't the case today. As for Alan Green, he usually told it like it is, and that has never sat well with many people; 'this game is appalling' 'the referee is having a shocking game', etc

Totally agree.

My 5 live football (and sport generally) listening is normally only for commentaries when I'm in the car, plus sports report when in the car after a game. I also like the Monday Night Club discussions. Anything else, I tend to avoid.

They are making some pretty significant budget cuts and 5 Live is in the firing line.

Plus demographics and interests are changing - in many ways it's not so different than when Simon Bates and DLT et al got the chop, they are targeting a demographic and the old farts aren't in it.

Like it or not, the battle with talkSPORT has been lost in terms of listeners and rights to live commentary, so it's ongoing importance to the BBC is diminishing.

I bet that's where Green and Pougach end up. Motty is there already.

R5L is a bore now, LBC is far better for current affairs, Talksport for football.

Alan Green is an odious turd. He spends half of a game talking about his opinion on things rather than the game. Good riddance.

Alan Green does get on your tits after a while. Not surprised he's being given a painting of a Spitfire and let go ...

But then I don't really listen to footy on the radio any more.

Good, he's an absolute plonker. Far too opinionated and constantly on the verge of becoming irate about something. He just sounds like a grumpy old man ranting at clouds.
