Now that sky put the footy highlights on for free after the game finishes immediately on YT, i dont see a need for it? I see why the Beeb would stop and broadcast some other sports that have been neglected? Surely the license payer isn't getting value of seeing something that is available for free?

More likely to harm Sky. People don’t pay directly for MOTD (license aside, and that’s a different story), so will be happy to watch or play off iPlayer like they always have.

Wasn't aware that SS were doing that - result.

Takes away the evening lottery though as to where your game will be.

Always found the MOTD format annoying anyway - 20 mins for the first game, rush through several more, some community stuff & then a few mins for the remaining games.

Just need West Ham to make the highlights worthwhile watching rolleyes

Will this make it worse for Sky? Why would you buy the sports package when you can watch highlights for free?

I like MOTD and the facts you can watch highlights with no adverts.

I think MOTD is doing more to kill MOTD than anything Sky are doing. BBC generally have terrible pundits, who spout rubbish and add little to the game, whether as co commentator or in the studio. The fact that a lot of the commentary is recorded post the game as well makes it feel very scripted and the excitement very forced.

Then when they actually get a game, they bring in Keown....

I record MOTD and watch it in the morning while the kids have breakfast. I fast forward through the twoddle the guys talk of unless i want another look at an incident. If you want highlights of the game enough to not watch MOTD it has been available for a long time. MOTD will stay because of the tradition, but because of that, it is done in such a lazy way.

MOTD rerun on Sunday morning with a bacon sarnie is great. Easy, don't have to search for it on you tube etc.

Appreciate the heads up, thanks.

Would much rather watch highlights in my own time so this is brilliant, particularly so quickly after a game ends.

Are Sky putting up the highlights of every game, or just the ones they broadcast?

I don't watch MOTD for the highlights per se.

It's more than that.

The worst thing they did to match of the day was put it on later on a Sunday morning. You either watch it late on a Saturday night and then have a lay in, or you used to watch it early on the Sunday morning whilst the kids were playing. It is now on about 9am which is little use to anyone. I don't want to be watching it until 1030 on a Sunday morning, I've got things to do!

Very interesting. Three minutes of highlights on YouTube, verses five minutes of highlights and five minutes of innate waffle from some ex-pros with the same level of insight as a man down the pub.

I think it will harm BBC just like how F1 putting the highlights of qualifying/race on youtube within a couple of hours of it finishing has eliminated the need to watch the highlights on Channel 4 five hours later and avoid social media till that time.
Aside from that the younger generation don't seem to have the attention span to watch a 90 minute game without distraction so highlights help keep them engaged.

I still mourn the loss of Grandstand.

Look at that moustache on Des Lynam.

Losing MOTD will push me over the edge.

MoTD and MoTD2 are on Sky's BBC iPlayer now.

I stopped watching MOTD a couple of years ago when I discovered how much Gary Lineker is paid. Plus, now with the fact of the debacle of the over 75's licence fee........ I don't watch it for Lineker, he brings nothing to the table for me, so I usually watch GoS or MNF. They're much better shows.

Thanks, that's significant assuming it includes BT's games, too.

The whole 'having to wait' isn't really in touch with 2019. Next thing they need to get rid of is not being able to watch whichever game that isn't selected to broadcast.

Having given this a few weeks I have indeed stopped watching MOTD.

My only gripe is that I usually don't know the scores if I am not watching a televised match, whereas if you go on to Sky's YouTube it's there in front of you.
