Man city vs spurs offside?
Discussion
Aguerro is standing offside but the ball was played backwards by a spurs player. It took a deflection from a man city player trying to block the pass and went to aguerro.
Was this right as the man city player didnt make the pass?
Is it offside because of the deflection
If erikson had passed it to aguerro offside he wouldnt be offside?
Im a neutral in this game and just wonder if it was the correct call etc

Law 11 https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/gene... page 33:
"A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play ..."
COYS!

But the opinion and decision to whether its offside or not should be the ref's and the refs only. He's there and he calls it.
Having another set of official sat in a video room reviewing and providing their 'opinion' takes authority away from the ref. He is the authority and should be respected.
Remember the reason and principle of the offside decision. To stop player goal hanging and having clear advantages by doing so. But when we're talking inches, shoulders, knees length that are offside and can only be picked up by camera, does it matter, would in make a difference, probably not. .
I agree VAR reverses clear ref errors. But does it really resolve a problem in football? No. Otherwise it would be rolled out in the Championship down to Nationwide league.
For me VAR is the thin end of the wedge.
But what a game!

Offside is binary. Unless City are playing Watford there is no room for referee error (referee did not know the actual laws of the game, linesman correctly flagged it offside). VAR should be used for binary decisions like offiside or ball crossing the line.
Referees in the PL have a clear bias to helping the big 6 - so errors have to be ironed out. My concern is over rules that can be interpreted - ie deliberate handball or intent to use an elbow. Refs will continue to use their bias to favour the big teams. VAR use during the World Cup proved this.

I think you'll find VAR isn't in the lower leagues for reasons of Cost/Logistics - not any other consideration.I'd actually quite like to see the offside rule removed altogether!
If teams want to leave a player goal hanging, so be it- they potentially leave themselves more exposed elsewhere. The opposition can choose to leave players back to cover if they so wish, opening the pitch up even further, or ignore the goal hanger(s) altogether, thereby obtaining a numerical advantage further up. Could lead to some interesting plays/tactics, it might open up new opportunities for aging but clinical finishers, and to me just seems like it could be an absolute laugh!
I would get far greater enjoyment watching quarter-back-esq defenders arrowing long balls up to a 45 year old Inzaghi and seeing if he can score before a defender gets back, than watching a gazillion replays of an incident to decide whether a player's toe was a fraction of an inch offside.
So many possibilities, what could possibly go wrong!

For me the offside isn't in question. The Llorente goal is though. Personally I would have given it. However, given UEFA stance on handballs in the UCL this season I was surprised it was given.
But the ball didn't touch his hand or arm. It clearly came off his thigh. Good decision by Ref and VAR.GetCarter said:

It didn't touch his hand, as far as I could see. Even if it did, I would still have given it as is hands were in a natural position and it was not deliberate. If his hands weren't there, it would still have went in off his waist.
