Aged 81. Our best ever keeper, without doubt. The 1970 save from Pele's header and the penalty save from Geoff Hurst in 72, just unbelievable.

Agreed. Brilliant keeper. Shilton's mentor.

Most on here are probably too young to remember Banks. I’d say he’s still the best goalkeeper I’ve ever seen.

He nearly signed for my team West Ham but the manager at the time Ron Greenwood declined as he had a ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ to sign Bobby Ferguson from Kilmarnock. He’d get fired for a decision like than now.

I also agree; England have produced a number of top quality goalkeepers over the years but for me Gordon Banks has always been the best of the lot. He also came across as a class act off the pitch as well and it's a very sad loss - RIP.

I remember Gordon Banks too , his save from Pele at the 1970 World Cup is still regarded as one of the greatest of all time . Very sad day indeed .

That's a shame.

Best goalkeeper in my lifetime.

Banksy funeral today and it was a lovely sight to see four top young keepers carry him in and out of the Minster, a nice touch that. RIP big man

It was the 3 current keepers of the 3 teams he played for, Chesterfield, Leicester, Stoke, and Joe Hart representing England. Not sure why Jordan Pickford wasn't there to represent England, and the current holder of the position.

Never was an issue to Banksy.
Stoke quite rightly came to stand still yesterday to honour not only a football legend but a true gent. clap

Back at the old WHL the visiting goalkeepers ( except 1 and that was muted) always got a good reception from the crowd behind the goals when defending that end. Banks got 'standing' ovations ,,if you can give one when you are already standing!! but you know what i mean

He was one man who genuinely deserved an ovation, and the fans knew it and obliged.
