Early reports coming in that Cardiff’s new striker, Emiliano Sala, was on board a light aircraft that disappeared over the English Channel last night. He’s one of Cardiff’s new signings this transfer window, signed from Nantes for an undisclosed fee, but reported to be a club record.

The search is looking more likely to be a recovery mission, rather than rescue sadly.

BBC reported flares had been seen in the area but clearly not found them yet.

This is tragic news, and thoughts clearly with the families of all involved.

Would the club have had time to have him insured?

Surely - who would spend £15m on anything and then let it fly to a different country and back without insuring it?!

You'd think maybe they'd have something similar to a fleet insurance for their squad? Maybe covers them up to a certain value within a certain time frame?

It's not an area of the financial services market i'm engaged in, but some sort of 'fleet policy' or equivalent makes sense.

No news is very bad news.

Report in the mail this morning that he sent WhatsApp messages on the flight saying he was scared of the plane and it seemed to be falling to bits. Also that it took three efforts to get off the tarmac in Nantes.

Mind boggles really, I'm interested to see what emerges about this plane and the operator.

I still cannot understand why a single engine aircraft was used over water at night, surely those involved could have stretched to a Kingair or Citation.

Sala booked the flight himself - Cardiff don't seem to be too happy about that.

I can't understand why all planes aren't fitted with EPIRB's... at least they'd know where it went down.

Sadly completely different rules and regulations for private flying.

I thought this immediately I read about it yesterday. No way would I be flying over a wide expanse of sea in a singe engine aircraft. And... before I get flamed and told people do, I know that, indeed most people in the south pass their PPL and fly to Le Touquet for lunch, but that's just me, belt and braces.

And all that will get sorted in time. It won’t change whether they do that now or in x days when a body is found. If you’re worried about poor old acardiff, I’m sure the minimum £100m they’ll earn this year from being in the Premier League will go some way to helping them out.

Really don’t understand this way of thinking. I’ll ask the mods to change the title to

“Cardiff City financial asset potentially reduced to smaller amount. Accountants concerned for FY 2019 accounts”

He's not the only one. Some of us can have more than one thought going on at any given time, or the ability not to be stuck on the same one....

I concede that discussing the financial implications at this moment should possibly be reserved for another thread, but purely from someone who has no knowledge of these matters (and no affiliation with any parties involved), I would like to know the realities.

Well it still feels pretty gruesome to me to be mulling over the financials, especially at a club than nobody on here seems to support.

Put simply, whether they get any money back is down to their insurance set up. The best policies will cover all their players for their market value and also to cover any liability the club may have to pay up the contract.

For example when a player gets a career ending injury, such as Dean Ashton, then the cover should pay out the market value of the player to the club and a lump sum equivalent to buying out the player’s contract to the player. Some clubs have cover for long term injuries too, to offset some / all of the wages durin periods of injury.

However, how a club covers their players and to what extent (amd with what excess, or aggregate deductible) is down to them. So it’s not as easy to say yes or no. Cardiff will receive whatever cover they have in place. If they’re undercovered, then that’s their mistake, if they’re covered fully then they’ll get everything. As I mentioned before the money will be of little interest, it’s a drop in the ocean in football finance terms and the loss of a player, however recent an addition, will be the bigger impact.

I still think it’s inapproriate to be discussing / concerned about finance so soon after this accident, but I’m clearly in the minority by valuing a life above cash.
