Any amateur referees?
Discussion
My 17 year old son is - qualified a couple of years ago and does a couple of games a weekend earning himself £50.
95% of the time it is fine but he’s had a couple of let’s say interesting games. Generally people are OK but some parents can be OTT.
He is also a coach for a junior team so sees both sides of the fence.
For him I view it as character and confidence building with exercise thrown in.
There is a shortage of refs so good luck.

I'm a Level 4, so do Step 5 as a referee and Step 3/4 as a lino ("assistant") so basically near the bottom of the non-league pyramid.
I think everyone should do the course, there is so much ste spoken on TV that is miles away from the Laws yet people seem to believe what they hear and read. Becoming a qualified ref at least gives you a fighting chance of actually seeing through it...
My advice is always to try and get to Level 5, it's within your control as you just apply and get assessed and the result is better games and better experiences. Staying as a L7 Sunday morning ref is hard work and not at all enjoyable in the long-run, because discipline and behaviour is so poor.

I saw Colin wker (Neil Warnock) on TV at the weekend saying "he never endangered the other player's life so I don't see why it's a red card. You learn something every day. I thought a red card could be given even if life wasn't endangered, but what do I know?
craig1912 - Thanks for the luck, I'm gonna need it haha. It seems quite daunting now I've been on the first day of the course, but I know it's going to get easier.
I've read up on a forum about games and what coaches can be like, I'm glad I'm at the age where I can tell them something and they probably won't laugh too much at me, if I was late teens I don't know if it would be different generally, I would think so.
JS - Your level is my aim, at the moment, I know how much harder running the line is than refereeing, but I know I need to do it to progress higher up.
I don't intend to stay at level 7, I've played Sunday league and I'm more than happy getting out of that area when the time comes.
If I may ask a question, I struggle, and know I'll continue to struggle with which free kicks to give for which offences etc, when I'm actually in a game.
Any learning tips?

indirect free kicks for any offence not involving contact with an opposition player (apart from handball, which is a direct free kick). So indirect for obscene gestures or language, obstruction, goalie holding the ball over 6 seconds, goalie picking up a back pass, or basically any breach of the rules that stops play without involving contact with an opposition player.
Direct free kick or penalty for any foul involving contact, plus handball.

I qualified at 16 while in Singapore in 1970/1 .
Reffed schoolboy stuff and a few forces matches then moved back to the UK.
My father was a top class ref ( old class one ) worked his way up to league one ( pre premier league) but gave it up because of the lack of enforcement of laws from the FA .
I have been involved in several sports and football is the only one where at every level those who support , organise and partake in it have very little knowledge of the laws and will criticise and abuse officials routinely.
