Back in the 90s it wasn't broken. We had the Cup Winners' Cup, the Champions League, for you know... Champions, and we had the UEFA cup for everyone who wasn't a champion or cup winner. Never understood why they changed it.
Nor me.In 1967 when Man Utd won the European Cup they played 9 games in total.
If you wanted to win it now you would play 13 matches as a minimum and if you had to play qualifiers like Liverpool last season you'd play 15 matches.
Quite ridiculous.

The fans want knock out matches, not groups...In 1967 when Man Utd won the European Cup they played 9 games in total.

But it earns big bucks for EUFA, and that’s all they care about

Interesting to see what this new competition will be.. either some sort of Super-Duper league, the 8 chosen teams (we can guess who they will be) touring the globe for a pay per view audience, a third tier competition that noone will care about, or a proper reorganisation that will get back to pretty much what was there before. Fact is the big cash cow, Champions League, has become very stale, with predictable results up until the quarter finals. They must realise they need to perk it up or loose viewers and revenue, because that's the most important thing.

It's the format of the Champions League that is making it stale. Those group stages are just an exercise in milking the fans and TV companies of their cash.As has been said - it needs to be a knockout competition right from the start - then you'd get some unpredictability. At the moment the group stages give all of the big boys a second bite at the cherry should they have an off day.

Agreed - But they need the number of matches the group stages provide, to deliver the viewers and revenue. The big clubs will never support a knockout, they don't want to risk that off day.As has been said - it needs to be a knockout competition right from the start - then you'd get some unpredictability. Bring back the Cup Winners Cup as a draw lots knockout tournament again, as well as the UEFA Cup as a draw lots knockout tournament, with less league qualification (say from PL, 2nd and 3rd to UEFA rather than down to 6th FFS and some leagues might only have 2nd place to UEFA for example) which would stop all this irrelevant and disruptive Thur eve matches having to travel 1000's of miles on a regular basis.
Won't happen though, as UEFA want the gravy train to remain in place.
