Can anyone describe what exactly is coming home, as this throwaway phrase seems to have reached irritatingly epidemic proportions?

Football...

If the OP intended this to be a clever post, it's falling at the first hurdle.

"Football" still doesn't explain anything. If England win does the world cup tournament come here as per Euro96 as i thought the location was decided by dodgy backhanders at FIFA?

Football was created in England. So if England wins the World Cup, then Football has come home...

I get what you mean by this post, it refers to Football being an English sport and us bringing the World Cup trophy 'home' - I am sure if I am wrong someone will belittle me and correct me as this whole subject is very touchy for those who 'love the game' or whatever it is they say.

We wont be hosting the next World Cup - that is going to be Qatar...apparently

It's a song.

There'd be a lot of singers dead with heart attacks if the words were meant to be taken literally.

I'm not a football fan, I asked the same question to my football fan colleagues as I genuinely didn't have a clue as to what "football's coming home" meant.

Of course they took the piss as all football fans do when a football question is asked because everyone in the world should know because "it's football", in the end one did tell me that as we pretty much invented the game,it means that the world cup is coming home to its birthplace.

OK understood. So basically just an ethereal concept for those in the footballista club rather than a tangible thing or event. smile

Can't wait for this crap to not "come home" tonight so it can be done with and mobile paramedics can go about their business again without loutish bints standing on their smashed up cars like trophies.

I've got to admit I was a little stumped too, it sounds as though the game can only be played in the country currently holding the World Cup.

Are we going to get endless tedious stories of what "it" is doing after the event?

"It's" going to the cinema

"It's" having a fag outside the back of weatherspoons

etc etc
