I'm a diehard Toon army fan. Have been a season ticket holder since the golden Ginola, Albert, Asprilla and Ferdinand days.

However, since those days no other playmaker. And note I said playmaker has made me shake my head in disbelief when it comes to passing the ball.

This guys is an absolute beast when it comes to passing, opening up play, pin point. Passes even most people watching the bloody TV can't envisage.

Yet, typical ste England selection dictates you select bunch of half wits like Henderson and other no mark players who as are one dimensional and can pretty much only run straight and hoof it up the field.

Southgate? Please fk off... Still have not forgiven you for that penalty you missed.

Shelvey has always had the raw talent. I watched him for Liverpool so many times.
He can pass the ball but he can also be an absolute liability too.
Midfielders have to have everything in their locker in this day and age. Has he got the engine to play every minute of the game as a 6 for England?

Expect an Henderson, Chamberlain, Ali midfield imo.

That might well be the starting line up. And to be blunt....they are all mediocre

Regardless, If Livermore is on that plane and Shelvey is not. You think that's acceptable?

Sod sideways passing Henderson and the Dier backpass. We need it up front...

As a life long toon fan I’m sort of relieved Shelvey and definitely Lascelles didn’t make the team.

I couldn’t give two hoots about England, so I would rather Shelvey didn’t risk getting injured and had a rest. Or worse, do well and inevitably get sold for whatever Ashley needs for this weeks casino trip.

As it stands, Shelvey can continue to play well and have the added motivation of sticking it to Southgate.

Not having watched a lot of Shelvey I was quite interested in your insight but then this statement told me all I need to know about your opinion.
It's fine to be partisan but your point of view loses all credibility with statements like this.

Shelvey doesn't have the temperament and isn't good enough to justify taking a risk with. England have enough midfield talent that they don't need to play someone that is as likely to get sent of as have a great game. That's why he's playing for Newcastle rather than Liverpool and why Henderson will be picked ahead of him.

Shelvey has all the ability in the world and all the brains of a 5 year old, thats why he wont be in the England team although personally id take him on the plane i can also understand why Southgate wouldnt.

Comparing him to Le Tiss though? i can only imagine you never got to see him.

Absolutely agree with this. Lots and lots of ability, but issues about his workrate, and temperament means he wont get selected for England. Potentially would be good to put in the squad as a different option but that's it.

You need to have the brains of at least an eight year old to play for England hehe

I think that's why they are crap at the big tournaments, they go out of their tiny minds after two weeks of nothing but playstation and away from all their toys at home

Indeed. This thread reminds me of a comment on the Spurs thread about 5 years ago, when someone compared Ledley King to Pele.

How true is the story that Shelvey refused to go back to playing in the under 21 squad after he got his senior cap? Because, if it is, you could see why Southgate (who was U21 manager) would have the hump.

Always liked Shelvey-not a supporter of any team he's played for.
Not in the same category as Le God-have watched him many times-played his Channel Island team once (he wasn't playing sadly).

Thing about Shelvey is he's not one of these full on athlete types but makes space in other ways. Great to watch-passing marvellousness.
