I used to be in goal and modelled myself on my hero Bert Trautmann (Minus the broken neck)

I was in the same team as Alan West, ex Burnley, Millwall and Luton Town captain......(A brilliant player)

Never saved many goals, but I looked good when I dived in the mud with my flat cap on hehe

I was pretty good it goal but never made the school team because my parents were not on the PTA.

Worked out for the best as I switched to rugby and had a decent career!

I was a goalie and got picked mainly because I had good reactions and would throw myself about attempting to save shots. I was pretty crap at kicking though.

I only played a couple of seasons and gave up mainly because our games teacher was an absolute !

Hated playing every sport with a passion, and would actively try to be the kid who was picked last for teams in PE in the hope I'd not even be noticed at all. I prefer sports with engines, thanks.

No, couldn't stand it. All those posers, shouting about square balls, and the like. Almost as bad as school cricket with knobs chucking the ball about rather than to the bowler.

Rugby, now there's a proper school game !

I was alright, played for the school team at primary school a few times, lost interest at high school other than just having a kick about with mates at dinner or free periods at 6th form.

Never scored that many goals but I could pick some decent long range passes out pretty much bang on every time. Basically a st Paul Scholes even down to being ginger.

Right back ( on the bench..hehe) in both primary and secondary school. Couldn't dribble for st but could stop a train dead in its tracks and I could pass a long ball pretty well, no real interest in it so never tried to go an further. Had a good few mates who were adamant they were going pro.....none of them did, even the lad who was actually really good.

So you used to play left outside then?

I once saved a penalty from who i think was Dele Alli, Eastbourne Borough Vs MK Don's U15's about 6 years ago. Obviously our careers have gone slightly differently since then hehe

Or right back... right back in the changing room.

I was caned by the Headmaster for making no effort at all in trying to save a kick at goal when I was the goalkeeper.

When the teams were picked, I was usually one of the last to be chosen.

Happy times.

I was in my school 2nd XI up until seniors (6th form), when there became only one team.

I was a bit of a wandering player, pop up in all parts of the pitch, sometimes do something good, other times be responsible for something stupid.

Never that fussed about training, probably why I never really improved.

Not good at all, when you consider that three of the lads in our 1st XI turned pro, although they never really made it. One played occasionally for an average PL team in the middle of his career.

I hovered around the 2nd or 3rd XI. I enjoyed the 3rd XI matches as I’d always score a hatful of goals, I think I got 11 in a 19-0 walloping of another school in our county. I was just too small to do anything of note. I was 5’1 until I was nearly 16 and then grew a foot in around 18 months. The pain from that put paid to any interest in physical sports, as it felt like I could feel my bones stretching.

I started off playing for a team & we used to play in the Home Park under Windsor Castle. I liked playing up front & would play left wing. At primary school they made me play as a centre half which I hated, but was the captain!

At comp I got shuffled out to right back, which was better than centre half but I didn't like. By about the 4th year I made it to where I wanted to be which was up front. I had no real stamina but could sprint, so the tactic seemed to be hoof it over the top & let me chase it hoping I'd beat the goalie & defender to the ball.

Nope, hated PE and hated football even more (and still do), I hated all the guys who were into their football, poncing around like a bloody peacock, thinking they were the man.

I hated PE, it is the only school activity where if you went much good at it, it was plainly obvious to everyone else and your life could be made a misery because of it.

Not to sound big headed but I was pretty good when I was younger. Left attacking midfielder and naturally left footed, Giggsy was my idol. I was picked up by Oldham (in the prem at the time) when I was 9 and was there until I was 14. In the meantime I represented Stockport Boys and Manchester Boys and played at a very good level of football. Whilst at Oldham we had some phone calls from Brian Kidd who was MUFC assistant manager at the time and they wanted me to go there to play. I turned them down because I was happy at Oldham, we had a great team and I was developing well as a player. Sometimes I look back and think what if....but I made the decision I thought was right at the time so I've no regrets. I then badly broke my ankle playing in a school match that I probably shouldn't have been playing in and it was effectively my career over. I lost all my confidence and felt I couldn't beat a man with my pace any more.

I played with some very very good players who looked like they would go on to make professionals but out of all of them who I played with and against, only one made it and that was Ben Burgess who had a great career at Blackpool. He left them the season they got promoted to the Premier League. Such small margins on who makes it and who doesn't.
