Why am I no longer able to support other British teams playing overseas?

As a Chelsea fan, back in the day, I'd fervently support all of them regardless; Nottingham Forest, Ipswich, Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Spurs et all.

Liverpool were the most frequent performers and I'd be jumping out of my seat if Keegan or Souness scored.

Nowadays I'm just hoping our British opponents suffer maximum pain and anguish abroad.

Is this change due to the ferocity of competition in the PL, or Sky TV, or the internet and sites likes this, or my age or something else?

Do we all now feel like this?

I know what you mean, with one difference. Back in the day I'd support any team in Europe, apart from ManU - always support anyone playing them. I guess I don't need to worry about that any more wink

Not sure about club football, but I recall being overjoyed at Scotland's 1978 world cup debacle. Ally McLeod with his head in his hands! rofl

It's largely irrelevant now, that most of the English teams in the CL have 9 or 10 foreign players anyway.

In the 70s and 80s I did want Liverpool, Forest and Villa to do well. Firstly because their players were the same players that played for England who I supported and secondly, as a Chelsea fan, Liverpool and the like weren't our rivals. Shrewsbury and Hereford were our rivals. So Liverpool doing well had no effect on me, they played at a different level to anything I was ever involved in.

I remember when Butch Wilkins left us to join Man U. There was no ill feeling. Why wouldn't he? He was too good for Div 2. We wished him good luck.

Now I want every English team in Europe to fail miserably. Because their players mean nothing to me and because now they are our rivals.

Yeah except for the time they actually won it and it cost spurs a place in the cl.

Don't get me wrong im not rushing home from work to go all John Terry full kit wker infront of the TV and I'm not going to punch the Mrs if they lose. Bit sitting down infront of the TV with a beer watching Chelsea V CSKA Moscow yes of course id want Chelsea to win. Even more so if there's some England players involved.

Back in the days of Charlton and Best, I'd even support ManU, but the arrival of Fergie put a stop to that. And as you say, with the huge percentage of overseas players it doesn't really feel like supporting British clubs anymore.
