I actually think its offering great entertainment at the moment, but would still say there are serious quality issues, especially with defences .But anyway I am digressing,an article in the guardian a few days back pointed out that viewing figures this season have dropped quite markedly.THey are unsure whether its just an odd occurence or whether it has longer terms impact.

from the article

'Early season ratings for live Premier League matches on Sky Sports are down by a fifth. On one particular Tuesday, BT Sport’s Champions League figures were down by 40%. '

Have we had enough ? I certainly do not enjoy it like I used to (and no not just because UNited are struggling ,I went throughout the 70s and 80s so Ive seen a lot worse).

Sky and BT got greedy.

I'd guess far more people watched those games than those ratings tell you, they just didn't watch via Sky / BT.

I disagree I think the premier league is as strong as it ever has been.

I'd say the more likely reason for Sky & BT dropping audiences is because people are funding other ways to watch it .

Prime example is me here in Jamaica streaming games on the beach .

Exactly, why pay extortionate prices when you can pay a fraction of the price through a decent streaming service. wink

if we get 3 teams into the ECL semi's then you can say its as strong as its ever been.

The premier league as an item is fantastic , but the quality of our top teams is not on the same level as the top Euro teams .

If I had the choice of watching Real & Barca bully lesser teams week in week out or watch my team maybe win, lose or get a draw, I know which one I'd rather watch.

1 point separating the top 5 teams after a tad under a 1/4 0f the season gone ! What more could you want ?

From my perspective... splitting the games between Sky and BT to 'improve competition' did nothing of the sort. Just meant I had another potential bill to watch the same games as I had previously, and I didn't feel BT was good value.

So I watch BT PL & ECL games on a stream if there's a game on I'm interested in.

Is it down globally? Or just in the UK.

as per my first words on the subject,it is good to watch, and agree watching barca or real or bayern in their leagues despite is boring usually. My comment was the standard isnt brilliant especially defensively .I agree its intriguing to watch.

Issue for me is the cost to watch games live on Sky or BT and often your team has a game on the broadcaster you don't have access to. Also with the improvement in streaming quality why would you want to pay for it? Yes the quality is still patchy but as its free im not picky.

If you buying both Sky & BT packages it all adds up price wuse, plus as I get older its difficult to find the time sit down and watch a game let alone all of the weeks games.

Overall im falling out of love for football, and much prefer to watch NFL instead.

I imagine this is it...also you can get official video highlights minutes after the games finish from The Times. That's an example of how they are carving up their own market.

Interesting that it's a global issue though.

But you didn't put this bit ...

"He [Simon Green, the head of BT Sport] said the danger of stripping out figures for a single Tuesday was borne out by the fact that ratings across both Champions League nights were up on the corresponding week last season. “Viewing figures on a Champions League night will depend on which teams are playing, what the stage of the competition is and who they are playing,” he said. “For match-day three we have had a cumulative sum in-match viewing figure of 2.3m versus 2.1m last season.”

So, on that particular metric, viewing figures went up.

Monopoly is bad, but duopoly is worse: terrible decision.

The USA market is undergoing massive growth. They've dabbled with "soccer" for decades, since Pele and co were playing there, but this time they may have got it right.

The PL is behind everything that's wrong with English Football, which is a shame as when it started it was revolutionary and had great potential.

Just consider it is the only European domestic league which does not exist for the benefit of the national team. In fact, the PL is really the main reason why England are so st these days, as the thrust for as much expensive foreign talent as possible to make it more attractive, fed by TV money and demands, eclipses all else. Grassroots football suffers as all non-league clubs and local facilities do not get any money from the PL (remember they would be funded by The FA, but the FA do not get anywhere near the income they should).

Worse still, the referees are part of an independent company, but as recent autobiographies will tell you, the Prem League still pull the strings. The whole game at the top is controlled by a company and not the national association, to the detriment of all others.

Perhaps the public are starting to grow tired of it - the inevitable result is that the whole game gets more expensive and people get priced out. I'd suggest we are seeing the start of that with the TV companies having to recoup their outlay from their subscribers.

The national team was st thru the 70s and 80s. Before the PL.
