Too many games (winter break)

Why do the English media always talk about not having a winter break and the England team being worn out when it comes to the summer tournaments?
Surely most of the top European leagues play a similar number of league/cup/European games, so why would having a 2 week break over Xmas do anything? Surely you'd just have to play even more games in a shorter period of time after the winter break.

Gerrard: 39, 46, 28, 24
Ronaldo: 47, 55, 55, 54
Lahm: 50, 47, 50, 48
Pirlo: 42, 45, 41, 25
Xavi: 47, 48, 51, 50
