I was having a conversation with a couple of friends last night about the figures that newspapers print for footballers wages e.g 'Wayne Rooney has been transfered to Sillyfeckers United and will be paid £300,000 per week'

Is that before or after tax?

My argument is that newspapers always print the highest figures they can when it comes to money in order to impress/shock, but my friends seem to think that the figures they print for footballers wages is after tax?

I don't give 2 hoots about football by the way, I'm just interested to see if someone can help me with my question!

Must be before, and there are ways footballers circumvent full income tax. They set up companies and get 'image rights' etc paid through that. And so on.

A lot get paid via EBTs, moving from club to club negates the benefit in kind on the loan.

Thanks for the inputs, It'd be good to find some proof of this but I got the impression it's not the most asked question on google!

Cameroon Striker Samuel Eto'o moved to Russian club Anzhi this summer and apparently he 'demanded' £350k a week AFTER tax.

Not sure really how the papers know these figures anyway as I doubt many clubs go about telling people the clubs wage structure. My company don't!

How the fek can someone be paid that much just for avoiding being stabbed and actually becoming competent at kicking a bit of leather around a field.

Little wonder I cannot justify taking my kids to see the local football team, some lot called Chelsea.

No one in the UK ever discusses after tax income or even after expenses in the case of a business/sole trader.

Supply and demand, innit.

If we could all kick a bit of leather around with the same level of skill and stamina as Wayne Rooney, then footballers would be paid £25,000 a year, instead of £250,000 a week.

Same applies to ticket prices.

Is that a week? yikes

Pretty good for a young lad for a year but........I think in my best year I might of just hit £60k gross, nowhere near that now and I had to wait until my 40s.

Should have done sports at school and not bothered with my A-levels frown
