Extra Ref's Assistants

Can anyone explain why the extra Ref's assistants behind the goal line are on the SAME side as the ref's assistan running the line?

Why aren't they the other side?

I cannot answer your question but they've been a complete waste of space in the games i've watched and they've never given a single decision.
