Speaking as a Latics fan I'd like to say thanks to Villa for playing it so straight with Wigan on the Martinez thing. I am delighted Roberto is staying. His loyalty to and relationship with chairman Dave Whelan is something a lot of other clubs could learn from. The way Villa have conducted themselves in this matter is another object lesson in how to behave.

Not the first time villa have been complimented on their conduct. Leeds said the same last year too.
He shouldve gone straight after moyes IMO. Was quite surprised MartinEz being asked.
Another shout for Moyes. Kind of glad Martinez turned us down in a way, doesn't seem to me that he's the kind of 'name' who would attract decent players or convince others to stay imo. Saying that, i would have preferred him over Rafa....He shouldve gone straight after moyes IMO. Was quite surprised MartinEz being asked.
No i didnt think martinez would be the kind of manager that would or could persuade the bigger names to stay at the club. as good as a manager as he may become i think he needs a few more seasons to be bloodied in.
what villa need now is a proven manager who has a high enough calibre and pull in the premiership
for me its either hughes or moyes.

Look at the most successful managers of recent (and not so recent times) - more were minor or no names compared to oft celebrated figures. Most of the current A list, along with their predecessors, had fairly inauspicious backgrounds before they won big. How many WC winning managers in recent times have had successful club careers afterwards?
As a Wigan fan, I think RM was a touch mad not to take up the opportunity and I suspect he might just regret it. I also think there are better managers over the pond than RM, should the Villa board chose to look properly (or have advisors who have at least a couple of brain cells).
