£75K. Sad that Vine settled for such a small sum. I was kind of hoping Vine would take Barton's house off him.
On the plus side , posting that statement will hurt way more than losing £75k!

Oh no anyway…. Part 2?

STATEMENT REGARDING JOEY BARTON:

The news of Joey Barton’s apology and commitment to pay damages and costs is not the final outcome of this case.

After five defamatory tweets, my lawyer offered Barton a chance to settle: pay £75k, plus my costs, and make an apology.

He ignored that offer and posted more disgusting tweets about me, even publishing my home address to his followers.

When I then took my case to the High Court, a judge ruled that TEN of the tweets I complained of were defamatory. Having lost, Barton has returned to the offer we made after tweet 5.

There has therefore been a parallel action on tweets 6-10 and Barton will pay further damages for these. A number of other steps — including statements made in Court by way of apology — are still to be taken, and Barton has agreed to pay my legal costs of all of the claims.

He may as well have said "Here is what my lawyers told me to write".
It's a slightly more nuanced case of this is an agreed statement, written by Jeremy Vine's lawyers, that I have reluctantly put out as part of the settlement, on advice from my lawyers

Note his intentional inclusion of the inverted commas to convey this.

Will he wind his neck in in future, or will he double down on it, hoping that simpletons get their hands in their pocket via GoFundMe?

The 75 grand is a big hit but I would wager the costs will be similar.

All because a petulant bully likes to gob off on Twitter. What a time to be alive!

He should have plenty of money left after his football and management career, I wouldn't be surprised if he is making some money from his hate and nonsense peddling. Lots of idiots happy to be fleeced for a few quid a month to have their own beliefs echoed back to them. 550 patreon supporters at £5 a month. He will also be making money from his podcast.

Russell Brand was making a fortune talking rubbish to his idiots.

Jeremy Vine is at best a smug, sanctimonious little sh#t, that being said he pales into insignificance against that walking pustule of humanity that is Barton.
Just the sight of him induces nausea, every word that spills from his vile, unfiltered gob should carry a public health warning, it baffles me how this jumped up little toad has avoided a good hiding for so long.

I get it that one individual could have a hateful agenda like Barton who just wants to be in the limelight still. But to have thousands of people follow him positively, they really need to dial up their own number, and have a proper fking word with themselves because they need their heads sorting out.

It's glorious to see.

It's also incredibly sad and pathetic. A 41 year old man spewing bile and hateful, disgusting views all day long.

He's a horrible piece of dirt and I wish him absolutely nothing but bad luck

That seems a significant step up in seriousness.

Actions have consequences shocker.

What were his actions though exactly? I've never liked the bloke as a footballer or "celebrity" and he's clearly a dhead posting for attention but whether you agree with him or not is it really worthy of criminal charges? Maybe I missed something?

"The malicious communications act makes it an offence to send letters, electronic communications or articles that are indecent or grossly offensive with the intent to cause distress or anxiety"

That appears horribly subjective?

Do you know what the actions/communications were which led to the charges? My point being unless you know what he's supposed to have done how do you know whether or not it's worthy of criminal charges?

It is subjective.

The fact he deleted one of the posts suggests he (or his lawyers) thinks he fked up.

The fact he's been charged suggests the CPS also think he fked up and there's a realistic chance of a conviction.

Has he said anything that horrific? I know she's his favoured target but I (perhaps wrongly) assumed it was merely pulling her up on her lack of skills as a pundit.

After a quick google, he called her and Lucy Ward the Fred and Rose West of football punditry.

It doesn't even make sense as an insult.

This was where I was coming from. Nonsensical stuff like you mention there and comments about her being unqualified to comment on men's football and not kick a ball very well seem rather lightweight for a criminal prosecution to be the response?

Is that really it?

Jesus, if you're correct that's absurd and people should be concerned about our freedom of speech in this country. Both of those presenters need to toughen up a bit. There's a line that needs to be drawn, but that insult is not it, far from it.
