The ref for the Netherlands game is an odd choice....odd in that how come a referee with form for taking a bribe is still in a job !
He also has history with Bellingham.

While that news story is also nuanced that way, clearly it was Bellingham who had history with the ref, given the former got fined for moaning about him after a game, deliberately referencing the (non-Bundesliga) legal case from several years earlier.

Or just a simple observation.

Well, more like "journalist digs into background of referee in the hope he can find something to write about".

It's a point worth making IMO. Bellingham was fined 40,000 euro for mentioning it in an interview in 2021. Not sure how a top level ref can be allowed to continue in the game after being banned for six months for taking a bung.

Indeed, but hardly a surprise given the amount of brown envelope circulation within FIFA/UEFA.

I was actually referring the the poster saying it’s an odd choice, not the article referred to.

But anyone who’s got form for taking bribes has to be seen as ‘odd’ imo.

Mine was a tongue in cheek comment. That referee should never again be left near a game and to think it’s one as big as this is incredible.

Definitely a conflict of interest IMHO and yes I agree, the ref shouuld have been banned for life.

Not defending the ref but I assume the offence (in 2005) he committed wasn't a "we will give you this money if you make sure xx wins" type offence. He was guilty of receiving money from another official who had already been banned for similar. That he was only barred for 6 months points to PERHAPS his actual offence wasn't seen as that serious.

Given it was 19 years ago, he seems to have managed to still have a decent ref career, if UEFA chose him to be in the Euros, despite his history.

I think blanket making "he should have been banned for life" comments without seeing the facts of the case are a bit knee jerk. And Bellingham was an idiot to even bring it up.

How in Platini's off shore bank account have we got a confessed match fixer reffing the 3rd most important match in European football.

The reason he got only a 6 month ban is because he gave evidence against the ringleader, who was banned for life. Akin to plea bargaining, as I've read the various reports.

Or was he? It’s going to be an interesting situation if Bellingham finds himself being appraised for a potential yellow card offence … ref will not want to look like holding a grudge nor afraid to take action

In any case I am in the why chance it crowd it’s a massive game why not just find another ref
