All that passing sideways and backward with no penetration... it's like watching Man United
lol, wonder if the United board are looking at what Rangnick has done with Austria and thinking they made an error?
I think Austria are a likely semi-finalist team, and could make the final.

if we're hell bent of playing the double pivot malarkey, it rice and…………. arnold? no. gallagher? no mainoo? maybe. bellingham? probably should be.
it's called a double pivot (i hate that term) for a reason. the team revolves around it, and if it isn't working……………...
You've missed out the player who IMO would be best suited to playing alongside Rice.it's called a double pivot (i hate that term) for a reason. the team revolves around it, and if it isn't working……………...

And what on earth was the point in taking him if he’s not even getting in ahead of two players playing out of position.
As Gareth would say…
“Because it’s good for him to soak up the atmosphere of the squad at a competitive tournament as he stands a good chance of playing a major part of Englands future,”

Yes I saw that BBC post too...too right though, its about as balanced a statement they could make, very truthful and on point.
The after match interviews were cringeworthy.
'Every game is a tough game'
Well no it wasnt for for a few other teams who breezed through with well drilled, well set up, well practiced line ups.
'We won the group which was our goal'
Yes because the three other teams were so poor and Denmark couldnt get a goal against Serbia, we were all sitting there hoping to god they didnt score a goal. Hardly going out there and winning the group is it.
I get it, they have to be positive, but a splash of reality wouldn't go amiss either so that we dont just end up laughing at them.

Im seeing something deeper in this poor set of results.
Bellingham looks to be part of one of these deeper issues, it looks like he's come into this tournament after all the big move club wise, but reality is he's been a missing man and can't play in this system so has thrown his toys out the pram.
Kane is also now becoming a detriment to England. He again has had a big move going well and can't play around these other players in this system.
These players have scored (the only goals), but come on, they have hardly been demonstrating world class effort/build up to score said goals have they?
He also lacks any decent wing movements, we havn't had inverted full back moves for the complete tournament right or left.
I do think Southgate has dug his own grave playing this same line up in attack for too long last night, Cole palmer changed situations yesterday, I'm not saying he is the answer but he seemed to do more than Saka managed for the previous amount of time.
How the bookies put us still at odds on favourite is beyond me.

I don't watch football other than the Euros and World Cup but even I thought that was an appalling display. The fact that Slovenia were congratulating each other for getting a draw at the end of the game says it all really.
As soon as we face a half decent team we are going to get absolutely destroyed.

Good points, but Bellingham and Kane have been super for their clubs. Either the system is wrong or they are. I’d say, given the lacklustre performances, it’s the system.Bellingham looks to be part of one of these deeper issues, it looks like he's come into this tournament after all the big move club wise, but reality is he's been a missing man and can't play in this system so has thrown his toys out the pram.

On paper, we have an amazing attaching midfield and forwards, but are set up defensively. Score one then park the bus. The problem is, last night where at one point we had +70% possession, the team didn’t k ow what to do, there was no movement off the ball because they were set up defensively.
Kane and Bellingham play for clubs famous for attacking football. Let them play how they need? Don’t let Kane drop back into midfield.

Slovenia had qualified for the knock-out round for the first time in their history, tedious game aside they were rightly celebrating. As soon as we face a half decent team we are going to get absolutely destroyed.
I had somewhere to be after the game so I turned on Talksport in the car.
Either Stuart Pearce was:
a.) taking the piss.
b.) had taken too much cough medicine.
c.) had taken a blow to the head before the match.
d.) all 3.
“Signs of encouragement,”
“I was pleased with the 2nd half,”
“A good improvement over the previous game,”
Maybe he thinks he might have a job interview coming up soon.

The system is the crux of the matter and Southgate trying to shoehorn players into positions they aren't comfortable in .Kane is also now becoming a detriment to England. He again has had a big move going well and can't play around these other players in this system.
It's an issue we had years ago, trying to play Lampard and Gerrard in the same team which forced Scholes to play out of position.
The best 11 individuals don't always make the best team

Think his friendship with Garry might be clouding his view. I've lots of time for Pearce, but that take's nonsense. Either Stuart Pearce was:

Probably time to do a rotate before the quarters.

Saka > Gordon
Trippier > Shaw.

Agree with the first 2 but Shaw shouldn't have been in the squad IMO, crazy decision. I'd change Trippier for Gomez. He's been good for the games Robbo was out and if we played Trent in right back then he could move across in a back 3 to cover. But we all know Southgate wouldn't want to play exciting attacking football and would rather have Kane come back into his own midfield to pass back to the defense.Bellingham > Palmer
Saka > Gordon
Trippier > Shaw.
They just like a bit tired.
