We asked a similar question to yours from the local guy who handed over our apartment. The place he recommended was near to the harbour and was mentioned in a guide. Not only could we not reserve a table in advance, we ended up queuing for 20mins when we arrived. The service was just too slick so you end up hot-seating the table; the food was OK, but nothing special. We live in France where you always have a table for the evening and the quality of the food is superb, even in small bistros.
We did find somewhere quite nice for a lunch in the old town. My recommendation would be to mooch around the Gothic quarter and just eat at somewhere you fancy, or like the look of the menu. An enjoyable meal we had was in the market, just off Las Ramblas (LHS as you walk up). It was very simple, a fried fresh-fish stall, with a great atmosphere with a Cerveza, and also fairly cheap.
