It's OK - they are purely advisory.

Best stick to them though frown

The speed limit is whatever your pedal will go to. Especially if you have a beat up Seat. Or, whatever speed you can get to, up to withing 50cm of the rear quarter of the car in front. wink

How do they tend to police the speed limits in Spain? Do they have cameras placed in parked cars and other such sneaky tactics like they do in the Netherlands or is it more overt?

They are VERY sneaky about it - huge signs warning of a camera ahead and brightly-lit signs on the gantry under which, speed cameras are, are common.

Radar 'guns' are also used.

they are getting very sneaky acctually hence original post, these mercs blend well in spain and have dash mounted cameras aswell as database tech.overtake one a little too fast and bang multa in post.they cruise slow enough to make you want to overtake too!also they have side mounted cameras in very plain cars parked on side of road(no warning triangle is a giveaway)next roundabout or lay by you get pulled.not seen many handhelds recently but they have got them and as chordiant says loads on the back of motorway gantrys which are usually well signposted and locations are available for gps and readily available off the web.being 20+ years behind they are playing catch up with scameras but they are realising fast the revenue potential, and the fines are BIG.

On the AP7 toll road along the costa del sol have noticed unmarked cars parked in the central reservation area breaks at various locations. They reverse right back up to the beginning of the break in unmarked cars so as you go past it's very difficult to see them, but they've got the cameras on the dash whilst they sit their and chew a few marlboro's. Then at the next toll both there's usually a very nice guarda civil officer requesting an appointment with your wallet just after you've paid your toll.

Unfortunately witnessed a couple of AMG Mercs suffer this fate this week!

Zero tolerance as well - even 1kph over the limit - GOTCHA.!

Never used my cruise control and speed limiter so much - also SatNave can provide an EXACT kph reading. Very useful.

Have never seen the 1kph over as of the innacuracy of most speedometers, they have always left a margin of error of 5 - 10kph as 1 kph would never stand up in court.

There has been much press coverage stating exactly what you have posted. BUT - all the protests have fallen on deaf Spanish ears - Zero tolerance remains a fact of life with the authorities.

Go on - try and argue your case in a Spanish Court and let us know how you went on.

Heard about the moves to confiscate 'high performance' vehicles, if the driver is found to be 'significantly' over the speed limit? Much debate about this going on in Madrid at the moment.

No definitions of what is - and is not - 'High Performance' - No qualification of what 'significantly' over the speed limit means, either.

It's all getting rather silly and out-of-hand.!!

Hmmm, I wonder if the radar guns can pick up a low-slung fibreglass bodied TVR? scratchchin

The interest is sparked by the fact I'm head to the country with a convoy of other Tivs next month. I'm just hoping the rest don't turn up with a 500 euro a day speed tax budget; I tend to be fairly law abiding when there's a significant risk of being caught.

Best make sure that you are neither at the front nor the back smile in the convoy.

Here you go. This is the first local one to be installed and has caused a bit of press coverage.

Must be the only country in the European Union, just needs someone to take it to Brussels.

I remember quite a few years ago in Andalucia being stopped and when I showed them my U.K. licence they told me that it was illegal, When I said that Spain was in the European Union and U.K. licences were legal throughout I was then told yes but this is Andalucia, wkers.
So I then produced the paper from Brussels stating this and was just told with a very sharp and swift wave of the hand "Fuera"

I would be very interested what they consider High Performance ?........and when it will be described.
Are they just trying to kill Tourism ?
I will have to post it on the Bike Club that I am a member of in the U.K and warn others in the U.K as well, this is something that we should all do, including "Pistonheads" somewhere.

There is a static camera near here which regularly finds its lens 'spray painted'. The problem being, you don't know if it has been cleaned off or not until you have driven past - which defeats the object of the exercise really. A far better indicator would be just the charred remains - due entirely to a rather strange, but 100% effective, phenomena known as 'Spontaneous Combustion'.
