If you want to be near all the shops/bars/restaurants then we stayed here on a business/romantic trip up to Alicante once: http://www.eurostarslucentum.com/EN/hotel.html it's only 4 star and no idea if it's the best but it was really nice and better than a lot of 5 star places I've stayed in Spain!
