Hola,

Driving down to La Cala de Mijas this year, the first time with the "benefit" of a Sat Nav system.

All the route finders etc suggest the red route shown here. I've done this once before 4 years ago and it was quite a drive through the mountains, which was picturesque, but a bit tough after 1200 odd miles.

On our return journey that year, we did the green route, sort of by accident, which we found much easier, flatter, more comfortable.

Any thoughts on which is the better option in terms of distance / tolls etc. I didn't really think too much of it back then but I'd be interested to hear any +/- points from the "locals".

I should add that we're in an MPV and not something that "enjoys" the twisty stuff.

Gracias, PP.

Sorry.

Start point is Calais, down past Bordeaux.

Spanish side will take me through Burgos, then down through Madrid on the E5 where I shall then get to the "fork" shown in the picture.

Cheers.

As someone who has lived in San Pedro de Alcantara, just outside Marbella until 2004 I used to use your Red route regularly and never found a faster route

I live in Marbella and do this route about once a year. The red route is the right one.

Safe trip.

I live in Santa Elena ( top of your map) and was at the beach this weekend with your red route, Its not that bad and its nice going through the mountains. also having done Cordoba a few times its a boring road I vote red. Also The Despenaperros (Santa Elena)now has bridges and tunnels so its a lot quicker but keep your speed down as it has avarge speed cameras in the tunnels. The road from there to Madrid is two hours of sitting at 120Kph going staight and flat Yawn.

You also have the benefit of the new road that bypasses Malaga and the endless Malaga hills section which was always a right pita at the end of your journey
