Hi, new forum menber, read on an off for a few years.

Previos toys of choice was Bikes , sports and fighters, For varios reasons biking carrier is over exept a qaud which doesnt realy count.

I am planning a sports car at the end of this year need to move to a house where the car wont ground out getting into a stupid basment garage first drive is a bit steep, I live near marbella and am wondering what the deal is with westfields etc, getting them on the road i spain, I know about the Marticulation deal for cars with COC, which i must do for the wifes 4 x 4 some time.

But what about westfields or other kit form stuff, i fancied an elise but im looking for somthing with a big power to weight ratio to replace the bike acelaration rush.

What would you recomend that wont be an absolute nightmare getting registered etc my spanish is poor. ideal budget would be £10k justifiable toy money, but could go to £20k with a rush of blood to the head at the right time.

All advice apreciated

What about something like a TVR Chimaera. RV8 engine so not bad for maintenance.
Sorry, no idea on Spanish rules for importing.

TVR
worth considering, i can turn a spanner my self so not to worried about finding specialist to do the work for me , Obviosly geomitery and stuff or diagnostics are out of my reach tool wise, I like the Grifith 500 beasties.

Westie sport turbo
I saw there is a dealer in spain selling them brand new ready to go on spanish plate 30k euros was the down side of that. but if they come with type aproval for EU, might be worth a look, means over my budget though. Budget constraints are governed by justafiable toy expense... blowing it does not mean bare foot kids or hungry cat it would just mean the wife looking for somthing equally expensive from a jewler shop. which means that overspend doubles up... on somthing i have no interest in... not easy

Elise
very interested i will look up the contact, I see you get a conversion kit for the S1 to make it a left hooker, nice if you could get one for the s2, My cousin has an S1. not the fastest car i have been in, but definetly the fastest go cart i have been in , lot of fun in twistie bits

Cheers for the info and opinions,

Some of the Caterhams have CoC for Spain, K series 1.8VVC roadsports, 1.6 K roadsports,
CSR200 I think. R400D I think...Caterham will be able to advise you better which ones.
Only on Factory built cars though.
Don't bother with the Spanish dealer, total waste of time.
You won't get much with a CoC Caterhamwise though with only 10K.
You can buy a LHD car direct from the factory and get it imported yourself, as long as it's compliant. But again you're looking at around 30K for something reasonable, as it would have to be new for a LHD.
LHD Caterhams are like hens teeth, and anything LHD with a CoC gets sold for silly money in France.
Mk 2 Elise is possible to convert LHD, all parts available, I'm told.

S2 elise can be converted to LHD very easily, but why bother. they are so small that even for car park tickets etc you can still reach.
I have seen 2 S2's around a few times, one in La Cala (yellow) and one in Marbella (Silver) and mine (Blue) makes three in total that I know of.

BTW, I forgot to say, the Elise S2 CoC lists them as LHD/RHD which makes it even easier to register.

Thanks very much for all the info..

Looks like the Elise will be within toy budget, Caterham will be a stretch frown

I will keep an eye out for the Blue one knocking around. If you see a scruffey guy in a Black vouge with a UK private plate on it waving that will be me.

How do you find the lotus pulling on and off the not so slip roads along the coast. its not to bad in the rangie as its high aup and impact resistant, i was worried that the right hand drive would be a bit blind pulling on to the road. some of the roads near me . like the east bound at elrosario are a bit of a pain to pull on to.

Im in the uk for two weeks on holiday , just now. its 12 c raining and windy, NE scotland lovely. might have a scout about for an S2 while im here though.

Hi Rotax.

Theres at least one Westfield near me (couple of KMs West of Estepona, in Sotogrande) However its on English plates (and RHD). Though tbh is RHD an issue in a westfield?

Rotax, I don't find the slip roads a problem tbh, as long as you position the car right. Its possible to see well enough and the available acceleration helps a bit too.

Personally, I think the only S2 worth considering is one without a k series, so aside from conversions that leaves 111R's, which will be mid range in your budget.

Looks like the lotus is the easiest if i want to get it on spanish plates..
keeping them onb uk plates long term is an issue, or at leats so i keep hearing , but so far i have had no hassel with the rangie. but that may just be luck

Ran an S1 111S Elise over here in Marbella for about 18 months, it was challenging! Forget taking it out in the rain, the roads are polished marble and even keeping it straight on the N340 became a challenge when it hits the white lines. Then it gets hot and it´s like polished marble covered in diesel so if you like tail out action from every junction and around every roundabout then it's the car for you - much as I like that in a car it soon becomes tiresome when even at 10mph it is throwing you sideways. Add to that the fact that the engine does its best to melt your back into the seat, the sun burns any part of bare skin and it´s probably only suitable transport for about 2 months a year. Although it goes against all my principles, I ended up coming to the conclusion that something like a 350Z or Boxster S might be a better method of fun round here

Andy,

Thanks for the input, The heat from the engine is somthing i hadnt given much thought, I see the point with the sun burn i catch it now and again on my quad bike with a T shirt on, you dont feel the arm's frying on the move.

Im of to plant my self in a lo9tus tommorow to see how the back hanldes getting back out. I went looking on saterday and ended up sitting in 911's well over my intended budget... but i liked them a lot smile.

i'm heading back to spain on saterday so it doesnt look like i will find the right car this trip. butat least i will be out of the auful weather, it has been constantly around 12c and raining / windy since i got back. worst scottish summer i have seen for a while.

Hi chaps, noted from some of the replies that there are a few lotus elise·s in spain,do they have the K series engine and how do you stop them blowing the head gaskets in this heat??

I have been considering one from the uk and bringing it over but worried about overheating..So may bring a westfield.

any thoughts

cheers Ross

Been talking to an English fellow who runs a garage over here in Mallorca today about this, as I've always fancied an Exige, but being as they seem to still fetch a lot of oney, I've also been looking at the Elise.
From what I understand of them, from my still limited knowlage, is that the S had the K series in up to about 2004, than the R had the Toyota engine.
The subject of the K series came up becuase he was working on an MGF, I think it was, and I noticed the K series in the back of it, and I commented on how I liked the light revvy engine in my Seven.
He tells me there's a moddified head gasket for the K series, which is a multi layer gasket. He told me once that has been done, no problems with the gasket again.
Obviously you need to look after the cooling system!
But it wouldn't put me off a K series car.
The other nice thing about the elise/Exige, is as has already been mentioned above, apparently the CoC has LHD/RHD typed in, and it's possible to buy the parts, I'm told, to convert. I've read somwhere you can get the CoC direct from Lotus for about 60 quid.
I know what I'd rather own given the choice betweenan Elise and a Westfield.

I recently found this Guy on the web, I've bookmarked his site, as he seems to have some nice cars in stock, and has sent cars all over the world, so might be worth having a chat with him?

I'm certainly keeping an eye on his stock. wink
