I took out both Gap insurance and extended warranty, even though I was buying from a Lotus main dealer. I worked on the principle that I was spending nigh on £35K , and whilst the the car was immaculate had done less than 20,000 miles, it still seemed to make sense with respect to any major failure would potentially cost big bucks after main dealer warranty expired.
Also the cost of both warranties was minor compared to the cost of the car.
Its really down to piece of mind. I was happy to pay for it.
In the end I kept the Evora for 6 years, had no major issues and never made any claims, so with hindsight I could probably have saved £800 or so.

TBH I wouldn't bother. They're fairly cheap cars to run, generally very reliable the majority of spends on the car are generally considered to be consumables (like the clutch) so wouldn't be covered by warranty anyway.

I'd pocket the £600 myself...but then I've never warrantied any of my cars.

I got an extended warranty when I bought mine (car was nearly at end of manufacturers warranty) and was bloody glad I did when it needed a new supercharger` (£4000+ just for parts apparently... though Lotus apparently shared the cost with the warranty firm as it was only just over 3 years old).

The question I'd be asking is what does the warranty actually cover on a 9 year old car - quite a few things might be getting towards the end of their life (depending on mileage and how it's been looked after) but I suspect a lot would be considered 'wear and tear', so you may find they're not actually covered.

I was the purchaser of Don262's Evora (see earlier in this thread) and it fills me with great sadness me to say I have just learned from his family that Don passed away last Friday, at home with his family by him, after a short illness.

I knew of Don's illness when I bought the car - he loved it and wanted it to go to another Lotus enthusiast and the condition (immaculate) is a credit to Don's meticulous stewardship. I was touched to receive a message from the family this morning confirming Don's passing and reiterating that he was so pleased that the car was in good hands. Don had a string of Loti over the years including an Esprit before acquiring the Evora and I'm not ashamed to say I was in tears as I drove away with his beloved car looking back in the mirror at the empty garage which had always been "the home to a sports car for the last 25 years" knowing he was putting his affairs in order.

Whilst I only knew him fleetingly he was a true gent and an absolute pleasure to deal with though the circumstances of my acquiring his Evora will always be tinged with some sadness.

So, this post is for Don - a true enthusiast and complete gent - and also for those who might be procrastinating over making a frivolous purchase - just do it as you never know what tomorrow might bring.

And, finally, a picture of Don's car, now in safe hands

Carpe Diem

Sorry to hear about Don. I'm glad he was lucky enough to find a good owner for his pride and joy. A good reason to just go out and drive it, and enjoy driving it all the more...

Indeed life is too short which is exactly why I am now a proud owner of an Evora S (without warranty I might add!)
