HID's and ballast failures
Discussion
By way of update I fitted a new NS lamp and ballast unit and all is now well. I never discovered whether it was the ballast or lamp but I suspect the former.
For information the genuine Valeo ballast units are available from Germany for around £65 delivered (or £380 from Lotus!) and the HID lamps from a UK supplier for £35 each (genuine Osram).
Fitting is fairly simply though the torx screws holding in the ballast unit are a little tricky to get access to. All in all very happy - I bought new ballast and lamp for the OS too and will do that next just to future proof everything.
...next up is to deal with the peeling lacquer on one headlamp - can anyone advise a reliable firm to do this?

Just in case there's someone searching for this in years to come, or someone has a similar issue would you mind sharing the part numbers etc for the ballast units and HID lamps please? I've also got lacquer peel on my headlight, going to try wet sanding them myself
For the ballast you need to visit Lichtex.de and obtain a genuine Valeo ballast unit LAD5GL (4 pin). Loads on Ebay but the majority are Chinese copies blatantly printed with the Valeo tag and bar code
The lamps are Osram Xenarc D1S 66144 and I obtained them from AutoLamp.com (via their Ebay site)

Perfect! My Evora is almost ten years old and I'm in no doubt that this post will be helpful for me in the future. The lamps are Osram Xenarc D1S 66144 and I obtained them from AutoLamp.com (via their Ebay site)
I'll let you know how I get on with the headlight polish
