The recent spell of warm weather makes me question whether my air con is working (the light is on though!). Certainly doesn't match my wife's ford focus for cooling. Any similar experiences?

Have you turned the dial right round to the cold side? You should hear it 'click'

When you turn the car on, even from cold the radiator fans will be on if the a/c is ok. If there's not enough gas, the system won't turn on so you'll not hear any fans running. It's not uncommon on early cars for the a/c rad to become punctured before they swapped it to a different unit.

My condenser was replaced under warranty at Xmas when I had it serviced without quibble. Perhaps a known fault? I had not raised, the dealer found it. Impressive.

As said, the early cars do tend to suffer from leaking condensors. Mine's a 2011 car and although the A/C isn't the strongest of any car I've been in, it's still pretty good.
