Thinking of going from a 993 to an Evora...
Discussion
What's everyones opinion..??? I have a VERY sweet 993 C4 vario. Its a manual coupe in a really great spec and with a totally full history. These things are getting rarer and harder to find, and seem to be going up in value. Would I be made to go into an Evora...??? Would particularly like an S, would have to be a used one though....
I'd always be very worried about the possibilities of a £5K clutch change, the water leaks and the very high rate of very expensive tyre wear. But on the plus side you do get a very rare car which people look at , if you seek attention, this will be far better than your appreciating 993 .
My Lotus Specialists tell me it's a forty hour job to change the clutch on an Evora plus the price of the the parts, so around five thousand Pounds. Brings into sharp focus why I so much love my track day 968, even an incompetent like myself can change a clutch in a couple of hours, I've seen it done in just over an hour !
hopefully that's it from the porsche salesman.
even assuming this anti-lotus propaganda is true, last time I replaced a clutch was? .... never actually. In over 20 years of driving I've never had to replace a clutch, so lets get this into perspective shall we?
ravon I have to question why you spend so much time on the lotus forums if you're such an avid porsche-o-phile?
I'm struggling to see why you're getting out of it?

Exactly. It's not a Ferrari/Lambo. It's a Toyota essentially.even assuming this anti-lotus propaganda is true, last time I replaced a clutch was? .... never actually. In over 20 years of driving I've never had to replace a clutch, so lets get this into perspective shall we?

I'll be amazed if Evoras need a clutch change.
The gentleman asked for forum members views, I have a view, and unlike yourself, every comment I make comes from a solid foundation, no rash generalisations, no apparently knowledgeable but unfounded assertions ( specially developed version of the Toyota engine for Lotus that you asserted but had no foundation in truth ) for example.
I'm a Lotus owner and enthusiast, I've also owned many Lotus car over the years, most of which have been purchased new, I've never purchased a new Porsche.
As I said, if the Forum Member puts a high value on having something different the Evora scores heavily over the 993, but as it is he has a marvelous car that is significantly appreciating, the Evora will only ever loose money, and if Mr Bahar leads Lotus the to it's final curtain, as it appears to many enthusiasts that depreciation will be catastrophic, they will be about as desirable as an Elite 501.
For your information, I've never been a salesman of any description, and have been retired for many years.

seen the price of TVR's at the mo..?? if Lotus goes to the wall it isn't necessarily bad news for residual prices. A late, low mileage Evora S will loose a fortune, but by yr 4 or 5 will be on the re-bound I recon.
As for the clutch, yes that is a concern. Clutches DO need replacing if you drive a car. In a light-weight Evora it should last a long, long time. But in a 993 they only last 40-60k miles - mind you it is only £1k to replace, not £5k!!!
My 993 is a 3rd car, and a nearly new Evora does seem like a great proposition. Only concern is the money I'd loose. As I say, the 993 is going up in value right now...

why then was there no mention of the 993's tendency to wear valve guides or carbon coking both of which require pricey top end rebuilds to fix?
They don't - never heard of this problem. The engine in a 993 truly is bullet-proof..... Suspension only lasts 40k miles though...The Pits, as of yet Lotus have sold so few Evora's, and so many seem to do few miles judging by the classified advertisements, we have no realistic picture of what failures will lie ahead for a truly used car. However if you study the forums and talk to owners and specialists there are already a host of problem areas to be aware of, one that hasn't gained much internet space is the steering rack, I believe made in one of the former Commicon countries, I know of an owner that had either three or four of those under warrantee, along with more than one replacement rear hatch in an attempt to stop water leaks.

richyd, the Evora is no light weight, it's heavier than a Cayman !
By a whole pound! according to car and driver scales, can't say that I would notice myself 2010 evora n/a 3093lbs
2010 caymen 3170lbs
2011 evora s 3171lbs

there are many, well documented 993 issues. to be honest I don't want to stoop to some people's level by going into them here.
suffice to say a Lotus with toyota running gear will be less trouble than some would have you believe
and a porsches aren't as trouble free as you've heard either.
listen too much some of the more joyless types on here and you'll be too depressed to buy anything.
buying a sports car is supposed to be a fun thing to do remember? in most cases the depreciation is an occupational hazard but usually worth it.
sure keeping your 993 will always be the 'sensible' thing to do, but if you really want sensible sell it and buy a golf diesel.
and for the benefit of some here 'loose' is an adjective. you can't 'loose money' on a car, only 'lose' it.

Thanks chaps - I just asked a simple question, but I seem to have started a Lotus V's Porsche war of words.
As the owner of a 993 I am VERY aware of their weak points, which you can count on one hand. They are probably THE most reliable sports-car of character, with an air-cooled engine that incorporates 30 yrs of development.
My original question was all about driver enjoyment, rather than "my cars better than yours" type comments.

Dear "The Pits" yet again when the facts don't meet your fantasy you become objectionable " to be honest I don't want to stoop to some people's level by going into them here ".
I assume your quite a "high flyer" very used to always getting your own way. Well meet the "pensioner", I'm only interested in facts, don't buy into any here-say or PR and advertising BS. If someone asks the Forum for a view I believe I'm as entitled as you to offering my view.

I met a pensioner a while back in the shops who stopped me, shaking his head sadly and saying "wasn't it terrible what's happened to LA?". I really had no idea what he was on about."Oh," he explained, "it was hit by a meteor, destroyed, it's in the newspaper".
I found the advert for the DVD of Armageddon on the corner of the back page of the Daily Wail...
Personally, I like Ravon's posts. He's so keen to hate everything that Lotus do. Makes me think they must be doing something right.
