Sometimes I wake up in the morning and have very limited breath and on the odd occassion I end up being ill from coughing and no breath...

Here is the issue though, it only seems to happen when I have a few beers???

Can be a few or a skin full, at somepoint in the night I become bloated with gas/air (not sure if I am gluping air when asleep or its the beer), only once I manage to remove said gas in the morning do I feel better and back to normal.

What is causing this and how do I not give up beer to stop it?

Note the sometimes = only once maybe at a push twice a week socially... not willing to now become teetotal or give up the lager.

Stupid answer: suck mints while you sleep; should make your breath smell nice... you'll lose teeth, though.

Sensible answer: drink less and see how things go?

Drink less than 2 pints... makes no sense even bother socialising, one thing I can think of is that sometimes I have been known to sleep on my back after a drink (usually more than 4) and that could be the cause but I cant see how that happens after 1 or 2 beers too.

Sounds a bit like sleep apnoea to me. Are you overweight, if you don't mind me asking?

Another thought... do you snore? As per last post - are you overweight? Alcohol can make the back of the throat more relaxed so you snore... or in your case, have a problem breathing.

no breathing problems at all... not massively over weight but enough that Im actually training now so that I get back down to a more normal weight...

about 14 stone 2-3 on a 5ft 9-10 inch body but with the build of a rugby player (thanks dad)... was massively into Hocky but have not played or really trained much due to work commitments in over 18 months, hence the getting back on it.

Not a massive drinker, was quite heavy (3-4 times a week) but the hangovers since I hit 30 are a killer which means that its now down to very modest levels.

Diet is good with porridge in morning, salad for lunch and small protein packed dinner.

I wonder if simply increasing the training will resolve your problem. Depends how long you are willing to put up with the symptoms, I suppose.

Dont care to be honest... 10mins in the morning getting up and hawking up a luge whilst I lose weight and regain my fitness isnt all that bad... If it gets too much I will simply move onto something like vodka orange and eliminate the quantity and fizzness.

If you hawk up crap from your throat or lungs every morning it may be a long term mild sinus infection, such as rhinitis.

Get something like Beconase from a chemist and follow instructions.(it's a mild steroid, used for hayfever treatment as well)

Beer, as well as a load of other foods, has a lot of yeast in it. Some people are slightly allergic / intollerant to yeast.
It can have a load of weird side effects, worth doing a search and seeing if you match any of the other symptoms (although a lot of those can also be caused by things other than yeast).
I'm no doctor, so just a thought.

I hope it isn't that (allergic to beer) for yor sake!
